Salford at a glance

Ideally located, Salford meets Manchester on the banks of the River Irwell. This city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England, is a vibrant city that sits at the heart of England’s North West.

A city of contrast, Salford showcases an abundance of history, modern landscapes, arts, culture, shopping, and stunning scenery.

One of the world’s first industrial cities, Salford is steeped in history. Visitors can discover Salford’s fascinating heritage through many historic places, whether on land or on water.

The Salford Royal Museum and Public Library (opened to the public in 1850), Britain’s first free public library, counts amongst the city’s many historic achievements. Other interesting places include the picturesque Worsley village and Bridgewater Canal, which played a pivotal role in the industrial revolution, and the haunted Tudor era house, Ordsall Hall, which has 600 years of history packed inside.

You can also visit one of the United Kingdom’s best cultural, sporting, and leisure destinations, gleaming with architecture and waterside dining, the Salford Quays. It’s a contemporary cultural and entertainment hub full of restaurants, museums, outlet shopping and watersports.

Located just 15 minutes away from Manchester city centre by tram, Greater Manchester’s unique waterfront is bursting with local goings-on and is an ideal destination for a day out or a weekend break.

Amongst the spectacular architecture at the revitalised dockyards are the Imperial War Museum North, MediaCityUK, and The Lowry, a theatre and gallery complex.

Along with the city’s urban and waterfront offerings, visitors can also enjoy the feel of nature. Salford remains one of the UK’s greenest cities, with over 60 parks and open spaces. Explore picturesque green spaces, open woodland and meadows and enjoy lakeside walks, picnics, and vibrant wildlife.

Student life in Salford

Sitting on the outskirts of Manchester and with largely the same high quality of life and relatively affordable cost of living, Salford is intrinsically linked with its bigger neighbour.

But Salford is a dynamic place to live in its own right with lots of things to see, do, explore, and experience. This provides for an exciting student life.

Events

From the arts, culture, sports and history, to family-friendly, Salford is always buzzing with events.

The Independent Salford Beer Festival brings some of the UK’s best breweries into the gorgeous Hemsley House. Enjoy great beer, beautiful juicy ciders and wonderful company.

The very popular light festival Lightwaves transforms the outdoor spaces at Salford Quays with a trail of illuminated and animated artworks. The spectacular event runs from 4pm to 10pm for four days and is free.

Celebrate the wonderful open green spaces of Salford at the Salford Walking Festival. Explore the heritage, countryside, and rural areas of the beautiful city and get fit whilst doing it with over 40 different themed walks.

Nightlife in Salford

You can venture into Manchester for a more dynamic nightclub experience, but as for pubs and bars, Salford has more than enough options.

With wood-panelled rooms, a leafy beer garden, and an eclectic menu, Worsley Old Hall, a 17th-century country house pub, is the perfect place to catch up with friends.

At the Seven Bro7hers in the MediaCityUK you can enjoy a range of lagers, IPAs, and stouts, as well as a vegan range and classic bar food, all in a laid-back atmosphere that makes this family-owned brewery the perfect place to unwind.

Perfect to relax, grab a coffee or quick bite, or just unwind with friends during the week, the Blind Pig in Monton comes alive at the weekends with a great selection of cocktails.

Entertainment

The magnificent building of The Lowry, alongside Salford Quays, is one of the top places to visit in Salford.

Inside you’ll find three stunning theatres alongside galleries showcasing local, national and internationally renowned artists. The Lyric Theatre, with the largest stage in England outside of London, and Quays Theatres, offer a wealth of fabulous entertainment. Enjoy the very best in drama, world-class dance and opera, live bands, and famous comedians.

Shopping in Salford

The Lowry Outlet mall is one of the highlights of Salford’s amazing student shopping experience. Others include Quayside MediaCityUK, Salford Shopping City, Swinton Market & Shopping Centre, Barton Square, West One Retail Park, Marks & Spencer Outlet, Salford Market, and the Eccles Market.

With a variety of local stores and premium shopping centres hosting global and independent brands throughout the town centre, plus Manchester city centre retail on your doorstep, there is an abundance of shopping in and around Salford.
