Three of the campuses are in central London within walking distance of each other, and the fourth one is in Harrow, northwest London.

Marylebone Campus

The Marylebone Campus is home to the Student’s Union, the School of Architecture and Cities, and Westminster Business School. Surrounded by fantastic architecture and a number of tourist attractions including the gorgeous Regent’s Park, home to London Zoo, Regent’s Canal, the Madame Tussauds, and the Sherlock Holmes Museum, it’s easy for students at Marylebone to feel inspired.

With many great restaurants and cafés in the area, you’ll be spoilt for choice whenever you get hungry. Moving around London is easy with the Baker Street tube station being located just across the street from your campus.

Regent Campus

The Regent Campus is home of the School of Humanities, the School of Social Sciences, and the Law School. The campus is also home to a gym and prayer room.

One of the biggest draws for the Regent Campus is its prestigious location. The Regent Street area is one of the best shopping districts in the world. The area is populated by upmarket shops, with many flagship stores of famous designer brands. At this enviable location, there is also a huge variety of restaurants and cinemas. A little further south is one of the trendiest parts of the city – the fashionable Soho.

Cavendish Campus

The home of the University’s School of Life Sciences and School of Computer Science and Engineering is also in central London, close to several fantastic attractions. One of the biggest and best museums in the world (the British Museum), is a short walk away and entry is free.

The campus is situated very close to the Regent and Marylebone campuses. Closeby is also Tottenham Court Road, which is loaded with shops, restaurants, and a cinema. If you want to explore the UK further than London, Euston Station is very close to the Cavendish Campus and it offers quick connections to interesting locations in the north of England.

Harrow Campus

Located outside of central London in the north-western suburb of Harrow, the campus is home to the Westminster School of Arts, Westminster School of Media and Communication, a gym, a sports hall, and London Gallery West, which showcases artwork from students and alumni as well as local and international artists.

Beautiful parks and a shopping centre are a short walk from the campus. A little further southeast is the world-famous Wembley Stadium, the home of English football as well as the Wembley Arena, which hosts big events and concerts featuring some of the world’s most famous performers.

History of the University of Westminster

The university boasts a rich history and has been providing students with academic excellence and personal enrichment since Sir George Cayley opened the Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street in 1838. A year after its launch, it became one of the first institutions in London to demonstrate the invention of photography and opened the first photographic studio in Europe on its roof in 1841.

That same year, it changed its name to The Royal Polytechnic Institution when Prince Albert – Queen Victoria’s consort – became Patron.

The Polytechnic was renamed Regent Street Polytechnic in 1891 and the first Board of Governors created after it began receiving public funding. In 1896, the first public presentation of a moving picture in the UK was held in the Polytechnic Theatre.

The Polytechnic organised the marathon and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1908 Olympic Games.

It transformed into a multi-site institution through a major new expansion scheme on Regent Street from 1945–70. By the end of the expansion, the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) was formed from the merger of Regent Street Polytechnic and Holborn College of Law and Commerce.

PCL later merged with Harrow College of Higher Education in 1990. Two years later it gained University status and the right to award its own degrees and participate in publicly funded research. This was when it acquired the current name of the University of Westminster.

Expansion overseas resulted in the University winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2000 and 2005.
