Where is the University of Sydney located?

The University of Sydney (USYD) is located in an inner-western suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.

Highlighted by the band Sticky Fingers in their song "Australia Street," Camperdown is a heavily populated suburb located 2.5 miles south-west of Sydney’s central business district. It is also home to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and has large areas of Victorian terraced housing.

The vibrant student district has a diversified demographic with residents from many cultures and countries from all over the globe. Only about half (52.4 percent) of its 10,000 plus population are native Australians, according to the 2016 census. The rest of its inhabitants are from abroad, mainly China (9.3 percent), England (4.6 percent), New Zealand (2.6 percent), Malaysia (1.4 percent), and the United States of America (1.2 percent).

Though the University of Sydney and its residential colleges make up a large portion of Camperdown, there are a few getaway spots within the community when you need a break from university life.

There is Chrissie Cotter Gallery for exhibitions and cultural events. Right next door is Camperdown Commons, a relaxing community revitalisation project that features an urban farm, a restaurant, a community lawn and an interactive kids’ play space. It is located inside Camperdown Park, a large leafy park offering a wide range of activities and facilities, including several sports grounds.

Another option for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors is Victoria Park, which is surrounded by shady spots, a playground, a swimming pool and a café.

In addition to its main location in Camperdown, the university has other campuses and research facilities such as the One Tree Island Research Station in Queensland.

To access discounts and offers across campus, you can upgrade from its free membership to USU Rewards.

If you are into sports and media, USU will suit you quite well. Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) has programs and memberships for everyone. There is an online publication (Pulp) and student radio station (SURG), while the almost 100-year-old Honi Soit, established in 1929, is the only weekly student publication in Australia.

University of Sydney history

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is the first and oldest university in Australia. It was established through the University of Sydney Act and assented by Sir Charles Fitzroy.

In 1852 it was inaugurated in the Big Schoolroom (now Sydney Grammar School).

Six years later the university received its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, giving it the official stamp of approval to issue degrees. In 1859 it moved to its current location in Camperdown.

The New England University College, which later separated in 1954 to become the University of New England, was founded as part of the university.
