Frequently asked questions about student housing in New York City

How do I apply for student housing in New York?

On Student.com you can filter and compare student housing in New York to find the right one for you based on your budget and preferences. You can also use our map tool to locate student apartments close to your campus or in a particular area in the city that you might be interested to live in.

After finding a property you like, click ‘View rooms’ to go to the property page and click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book Now’ and the room type you’d like to go for. One of our booking consultants will then be in touch with you to take you through the next steps, either to give you more information or to take you through the steps of the booking process.

In New York, there are many new rooms that come to the market everyday, so if you do not see exactly what you are looking for, we can help to see if there are any new options that better fit your needs, as well as help you with finding roommates. We will help you with all questions and make sure you are getting the best deal available.

What options are there for contract length?

New York has very flexible rental lengths most starting at 1-3 months. The shorter the lease term, the higher your monthly rental rates will be. We recommend leasing for 6 or more months to lock in more affordable rates. Enquire on our site and we will work to find the best option for you!

What types of rooms do you offer?

We offer three different types of student accommodation with the New York properties we list.

When you book a Shared Room you’ll be sharing a bedroom with at least one other person, as well as sharing other living spaces like the bathroom and kitchen.

With a Private Room you’ll get a private bedroom and in some cases, a private bathroom as well. You’ll have to share any additional living facilities with inhabitants of other rooms.

If you book the Entire Place you’ll get a studio all for yourself. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom, and cooking facilities and won’t have to share anything with anyone.

Can I stay in my housing over the summer?

Student summer housing is available on select properties. If you’d like to know more, get in touch with us and our booking consultants will be happy to give you more information.

Are bills included in my rent?

This depends on the property you rent and you will see on the listing whether or not the bills are included. We have many rooms that offer an all inclusive price.

Can I see the property before I move in?

Yes. Our booking consultants will be happy to arrange a viewing for you if you’ll be in New York City before your move-in date.

What is a guarantor and will I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs the rental contract with you and commits to paying your rent if you can’t. A guarantor is most typically a family member, but it can be anyone. Most New York landlords want you to have a guarantor, so you’ll most likely need one when booking your apartment.

If you are an international student and do not have a guarantor, most of our New York partners will allow you to rent rooms with additional deposits and proof of enrollment, along with an I-20 form. Our booking consultants can help you get all of this sorted once you are ready to move forward.

Will I need a visa to study in New York City?

If you want to study in the United States of America and you’re not a citizen, you’ll need to obtain a student visa issued by a US Embassy or Consulate in your home country. You can read more here and here.
