History of the University of Manchester

In its present form, the University of Manchester was formed in 2004 with the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). After a century of collaboration, both institutions agreed to combine and form the largest single-site university in the UK.

In 1880 Owens College, which was founded in 1851, became the first constituent part of the federal Victoria University.

The colleges then separated and Owens College was reconstituted as the Victoria University of Manchester in 1903.

The university expanded considerably between the years 1890 and 1939, with new laboratories and new arts buildings being established.

In 1994 formal ties between the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST were severed after UMIST gained the power to award its own degrees. The separation only lasted a decade before both institutions joined forces again in March 2003.

A year later Queen Elizabeth bestowed its royal charter on October 1, 2004, and the University of Manchester was officially born.

We offer three different types of rooms:

In Private Rooms, only one person occupies the bedroom. Depending on the property, you may get a private or a shared bathroom. However, like the living arrangement for shared rooms, other living spaces are shared with occupants of other rooms.

An Entire Place is a fully private studio property with private living spaces and amenities. You will get your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette without having to share with anyone. The perfect choice for anyone who enjoys their privacy!

What bills are included in the price of my flat?

Usually, all bills are included in the rent. However, check the property page of the place you’re interested in because different properties may have slightly different arrangements.

Many properties also include free Wi-Fi in the rent.

Do you offer accommodation for postgraduate students?
