Coventry University is located on Priory St in Coventry City Centre, in the West Midlands area of the United Kingdom. Vibrant, multicultural, affordable and safe city with low crime rates, Coventry is a fantastic place to study.

It is the ninth largest city in England and the UK’s most central city. This makes other parts of the country very accessible and easy to explore.

With a central location, a diverse culture and friendly people, Coventry is a great place to study and live for domestic and international students alike.

Unpretentious and surprisingly charming, this old industrial city offers a lot to its much-welcomed student population. With a live music scene, museums, theatres, cinemas, sports venues and a range of shops, cafés and bars, there is something for everyone.

Things to do in Coventry

There is plenty to do and see in Coventry for students, whether you are into music, art, fashion or sports. Plus, the university’s central campus will put you right at the heart of the action.

Nightlife

Nightlife is an important part of the university experience and Coventry is not short of it. There are several bars, cafes, pubs and clubs for different tastes around the city centre including Kasbah, Coventry's main nightclub club; JJ’s, which usually plays electronic, rap, R&B, and pop music; and Catch Twenty Two for a Latin feel. Most of these venues have dedicated games and social activity nights and are within walking distance from the university campus.

Music

Coventry is home to a range of music venues in the city-centre such as the Empire Coventry, and The Tin Music and Arts. The Ricoh Arena also hosts stadium shows from big-name music and comedy acts.

The city also hosts the annual three-day Godiva music festival.

Culture & history

Coventry was awarded the title of UK City of Culture 2021 for a reason. The city is highly cultural with several theatres, museums and art galleries dotted around the city.

The Belgrade, Criterion and Warwick Arts Centre, one of the largest arts centres in the UK, all show a wide range of productions and events. William Shakespeare’s nearby hometown Stratford-upon-Avon is a huge hub for theatre, while the Odeon shows all the latest blockbuster films. The Showcase Cinema is a great hit with students showing the latest films at student discount prices.

The majority of the city was destroyed during World War 2 but some of Coventry’s most symbolic historical landmarks such as the Cathedral remain. To learn all about the history of the city you will be living in, the Blue Badge Guided Tours will allow you to discover its past whilst being sociable walking in groups.

You can also get a good taste of the city’s history by attending the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum for free.

Getting around

What’s more, all of this will be easy to explore because of the city’s compact size. Coventry is small enough to get around easily by foot or bike.

Also, all university campuses have good transport links and are easily accessible by road, rail and bus. Coventry’s bus station is also nearby.

And whenever you want to venture outside of the city, Coventry’s central location gives easy access to many other major cities in the UK. Birmingham is only 20 minutes away while London is just within an hour by train. Manchester and Liverpool are also just over two hours by direct train.

Food

A wide variety of cuisines from around the world can be found in the city including Middle Eastern, American, Caribbean, French, Asian and British from restaurants, street food stalls or the iconic green food vans.

History of Coventry University

Coventry University’s long history as an education provider can be traced as far back as 1843 with the founding of the Coventry School of Design.

It went through several name changes (Coventry School of Art and the Municipal Art School) before it became known as Coventry College of Art in the 1950s.

To meet the high demands of technical training which the then Coventry Technical College (now City College Coventry) could not meet in the late 1950s, Lanchester College of Technology was formed in honour of automotive industry pioneer, Dr Frederick Lanchester.

In 1970, it combined with the College of Art, and the Rugby College of Engineering Technology to form Lanchester Polytechnic. It kept this name up until 1987 when it was changed to Coventry Polytechnic before the final change to Coventry University after it was granted university status in 1992.

To further attract international students, the university established its London campus in 2010. Two years later Coventry University College was set up within the main campusoffering programs up to degree-level at a lower cost.
