It’s ranked among the top 100 universities globally, placing 77th in 2022 QS World University Rankings, and 16th in the UK.

The University has a comprehensive list of academic programmes offering more than 300 undergraduate, postgraduate, and foundation year degree programmes across a wide range of subject areas in five faculties - Engineering and Physical Sciences, Medicine, Arts and Humanities, Environmental and Life Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The UK’s leading university for engineering, Southampton complements its core subjects by offering exclusive areas of study in subjects such as audiology, acoustical engineering, archaeology, criminology, optoelectronics, and gerontology.

A research-intensive university

Dedicated to research-oriented education, Southampton has partnered with other universities, government bodies, and industries to conduct integrated research and innovation programs, and is also funded by businesses for commercial research and development.

A founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, Southampton has been recognised for its research-intensiveness, effectiveness, and quality.

It has the only Engineering faculty in the UK that received the highest rating (5*) across all disciplines in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Over 97 percent of the university’s research was assessed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ and was ranked 8th and 11th in the UK respectively for research intensity based on the volume and quality of research.

The university is at the forefront of pioneering cancer immunotherapy research, and with the help of large-scale facilities such as wind tunnels and towing tanks is pushing the boundaries of performance sport.

University of Southampton history

The university’s history can be traced back to 1862 with the formation of the Hartley Institution. A name change to Hartley College in 1896 signified a shift from the part-time teaching of adult evening classes to the full-time teaching of students.

Six years later, in 1902, the institution adopted the word university in its name for the first time, becoming Hartley University College.

The current main campus, Highfield, was opened in 1919, providing much-needed space for the rising student population at the time. The first academic library (The Turner Sims Library) was opened in 1935. Twelve years later, one of the first departments of electronics in the world was founded by pioneering radio engineer Eric Zepler.

In one of her first official acts as monarch, Queen Elizabeth II granted the university college a royal charter in 1952, officially transitioning the institution to become the University of Southampton.

In the year 2000, the university launched the start-up enterprise Southampton Photonics, the largest ever successful university spin-out of its kind.

The inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, became a professor at the university’s computer science department in 2004.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near the University of Southampton

How can I book private accommodation near the University of Southampton on Student.com?

Applying for student accommodation with Student.com is simple and easy. After choosing the student property you’d like to live in, go to that property’s property page by clicking on the ‘View rooms’ button.

On the property page, you’ll need to choose your preferred room type. Once you’ve chosen this, click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book now’. You’ll then be asked to leave your contact details so that one of our booking consultants can call you and walk you through the next steps of the booking process, as well as answer any questions you may have.

Why should I live in private student accommodation rather than university halls?

There are many advantages to living in private accommodation rather than halls. Many modern purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) have great amenities that the inhabitants can use. These typically include things like in-house gyms, games rooms and a calendar of great social events where you can have fun and make new friends.

When you book a private accommodation, you can also choose to live in any area of Southampton you like. So, whether you prefer to live right next to your campus or in the city centre next to all the activities, you can find what you’re looking for on Student.com.

Another good thing about private accommodation is the ability to choose the room type you like, whether you prefer to share a room with a flatmate or want to live by yourself.

What are the different types of student rooms you offer?

We currently offer three different types of student rooms:

A Shared Room has multiple people sharing the same bedroom. Kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms are shared with other student tenants from other rooms.

A Private Room offers a private bedroom just for yourself. Depending on the property, the bathroom may be either private or shared. Other facilities are shared with other tenants.

An Entire Place offers a fully self-contained studio property with completely private living facilities. This is a great choice if you love your privacy!

Do you offer student accommodation in the city centre?

Yes, we offer accommodation options both in the Southampton city centre as well as next to the University of Southampton campus.

Are bills included in the rent?

In most properties we list, bills are typically in the rent. However, check the property page to make sure that this is the case in the property you’re interested in.

Are the flats you list fully furnished?

Yes, most of the student properties we list are fully furnished. Again, check the property page to make sure if this is the case with the property you like.

Can I see the accommodation before booking it?

Most of the properties we list have a great range of photos and videos on the property page, so you’ll be able to get a good idea of what your new home will look like.

However, if you’d prefer to see the place for yourself before moving in and you can get to Southampton before your move-in date, a viewing can be arranged for you. Just give us a call and our booking consultants will set it up.
