History of the University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900 on the radical vision of its first Chancellor, politician and statesman Joseph Chamberlain.

It is England’s first civic or ‘redbrick’ university, with students being accepted on an equal basis regardless of their background or religion.

When it was founded, the University of Birmingham represented a new model for higher education being the first in England to be built on a campus model, to incorporate a medical school and to offer dentistry degrees.

The university was established by Queen Victoria by Royal Charter and was a founding member of the National Union of Students. The first phase of the campus was completed in 1909 with the help and support of esteemed architect Sir Aston Webb.

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts opened its doors in 1939. The first MSc programme in Geotechnical Engineering commenced under the title of “Foundation Engineering” in 1956. That same year the UK’s longest-running MSc programme in Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors also started at the university.
