Where is Macquarie University located?

Macquarie’s main campus is located in North Ryde, 16km and about 30 minutes north-west of the Sydney CBD (Central Business District). The stunning 126-hectare park-like campus is ideally located in the heart of Australia’s largest high-tech precinct.

The campus sits across the street from the Macquarie Centre which has many cafés, restaurants and takeaway outlets, major retail stores, supermarkets, a cinema complex and an ice-staking rink.

North Ryde is part of the official City of Ryde, which encompasses several adjacent suburbs including Ryde, East Ryde, West Ryde, Gladesville and Macquarie Park.

Despite the majority of its 11,000 population being Australian born (60 percent), the suburb attracts a diverse mix of people including migrants from China, India, Europe and Southeast Asia.

North Ryde might be a major business district, but its riverside location offers numerous outdoor spaces and activities to be enjoyed. The large upscale Macquarie Centre and Top Ryde shopping centres both have cinema complexes and offer mixed retail, department stores, supermarkets and essential services, while the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre offers multiple sporting activities.

There is also a local golf course and the North Ryde oval is a popular spot for local sports such as cricket and football.

Living in Sydney

Whenever you feel like venturing outside of Sydney’s CBD or the suburb of North Ryde, you won’t be short of things to explore in the rest of Sydney.

With year-round sunny weather, cultural diversity, a relaxed lifestyle, efficient transport system, a high level of safety and countless things to see and do, Sydney is one of the leading student cities in the world. You can definitely say that Sydney has something for everyone.

To the east, you’ll find close to 100 postcard-worthy beaches, while to the west, be awed by the breath-taking Blue Mountains. Escape to the famous vineyards of the Hunter Valley, explore pristine national parks, or take a road trip to the Snowy Mountains and overlook the city at the highest mountain range in mainland Australia.

History of Macquarie University

Formally established in 1964 by the New South Wales Government, Macquarie was the third university to be formed in the metropolitan area of Sydney.

The university first opened to students in 1967 and expanded rapidly during the seventies and eighties in courses offered, student population and campus development.

The university established the third law school in Sydney (Macquarie Law School) in 1972 before absorbing The Institute of Early Childhood Studies of the Sydney College of Advanced Education in 1990.

Macquarie became the first Fair Trade accredited university in Australia in 2009. A year later it also became the first university in Australia to own and operate a private medical facility when it opened Macquarie University Hospital. The $300-million hospital is the first and only private not-for-profit teaching hospital on an Australian university campus.
