It sits on a 38-hectare (94-acre) site, 4.3 miles from the Sydney central business district (CBD).

The lively, upscale inner-city area of Paddington hosts the UNSW Art & Design faculty, while UNSW Canberra is located at the Australian Defence Force Academy in the Australian capital. Kensington is located 6 kilometres southeast of the Sydney CBD in the city of Randwick’s local government area south of Moore Park and west of the Randwick Racecourse.

The residential suburb is heavily influenced by the racing industry and the UNSW. The main campus is one of its principal landmarks along with the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the exclusive Australian Golf Club.

There are a handful of cafes, restaurants, and shopping strips in “Kenso” for students to enjoy during their time away from university life.

History of the UNSW

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was established in 1949 by the Act of the Parliament of New South Wales. However, its history can be traced back to the formation of the Sydney Mechanics Institute established in 1843, and Sydney Technical College in 1878.

The idea for the university came after World War II after recognising the increasing need to meet the demand for specialised training in engineering and technology-related fields.

Shortly after its establishment, the new university formed Colleges at Newcastle in 1951 and Wollongong in 1961, which later became the University of Newcastle and the University of Wollongong in 1965 and 1975, respectively.

Originally the New South Wales University of Technology, in 1958 the university's name was changed to the University of New South Wales to reflect its transformation from a technology-based to a generalist university.

At launch, the university had a unique focus on the scientific, technological and professional disciplines, but in 1960 it broadened its scholarly base by establishing the faculties of Arts, Medicine and Law in 1971.
