History of Northeastern University

The history of Northeastern University dates back to 1896 when the Boston YMCA decided to establish the Evening Institute for Young Men in order to organise and coordinate the classes they were offering. Starting as an institute offering evening classes, it started offering the first day classes in 1909. By 1916 the institute had grown enough that the Massachusetts Legislature decided to incorporate it. At this point it was renamed Northeastern College.

As more and more new classes in different fields were added, the college changed names again in 1922, this time getting its current name, Northeastern University. One year later the university received general degree granting powers from the Massachusetts Legislature. In 1926 the university started using a husky as its mascot, a practice that is still in use today.
