Get to know Glasgow
You may be moving to Glasgow for your studies, but Scotland’s largest city has so much more to offer than just studying. The city has a proud industrial heritage and is dominated by magnificent Victorian architecture and landscaped parks. It’s easy to see that Glasgow boomed as the ‘second city of the British Empire’ and is today renowned by students for its energy, humour and creativity.
Founded in the late 6th century, Glasgow today has an urban population of about 1.2 million, making it the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom. Since the days of the Industrial Revolution, Glasgow has been a centre of industry and is today especially notable for its shipbuilding and marine engineering industries.
Things to do in Glasgow
After your lectures you can explore the City Centre, with the gothic, leafy Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis in the East End before heading back to your flat. If you love shopping and enjoying the good life, consider living near the Merchant City, which is bursting with luxury restaurants and designer shops. Sauchiehall Street is crackling with a youthful energy, while the West End is home to the University of Glasgow and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
If you’re into sports, Glasgow is a great place to live in. You definitely don’t want to miss the fiercely contested Old Firm match between local rivals Celtic and Rangers, often said to be the most famous derby game in football.
Studying in Glasgow
Glasgow is a great place to study for many reasons. You can study in historical universities with great teaching and high rankings. For example the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the United Kingdom, founded in 1451. It’s also a top 100 university in the world. Thanks to English being the official language, you can naturally complete your whole program in English.
Studying in Scotland can be very good for your wallet too. If you are an EU national, you can have your tuition fees paid for by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. That will hopefully leave you with some more money to spend on your accommodation. How does the application process work?
We’ve tried to make the application process for student accommodation as simple as possible. All you have to do is choose your favourite of the couple of dozen different accommodation options we have on offer in Glasgow. Once you’ve chosen your favourite, decide which type of room you’d like to live in, figure out the dates you’ll be needing the accommodation for and click ‘Book Now’. If you have any questions, click ‘Enquire’ and one of our booking consultants will be in touch with you shortly to discuss your options and answer any questions.
What types of rooms are available?
We offer three different types of rooms for accommodation in Glasgow. The first option is a Shared Room, where you share a bedroom with at least one other person. All other facilities are also shared.
If you book a Private Room, you’ll get your own bedroom (and in some properties a private bathroom) and will share other facilities.
If you book an Entire Place, you’ll get an entire studio for yourself. This means you’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom and cooking facilities, without needing to share anything with anyone. A perfect choice if you enjoy your own peace and quiet.
How do I pay my rent?
We will provide you all the needed payments details once you’ve signed the contract and finalised the booking with one of our booking consultants. You’ll pay the rent directly to the landlord and won’t have to pay anything to Student.com.
Usually you can pay your rent to the landlord either by bank transfer or with a credit or debit card.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes, in order to secure the booking, you’ll need to pay the landlord a deposit. Your booking consultant will give you more information on this when you are finalising the booking.
Can I see the property before I make my choice?
Yes, absolutely! If you’ll be in Glasgow before your move-in date, contact us and one of our booking consultants can arrange viewings for you. If you can’t choose between a couple of good options, seeing the properties in person can often help you make up your mind. Make sure to contact us as soon as possible, as some landlords may require viewings to be booked a couple of days beforehand.
Can I live with a friend or with my partner?
Yes, this can usually be arranged. Once you’ve submitted your application, you can log into your user account on Student.com. Navigate to the section for managing your preferences and state that you’d like to live together. Make sure your friend or partner does the same and writes it down on their account preferences that they’d like to live with you.
