Where is Anglia Ruskin University located?

With campuses in four different locations, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is one of the largest universities in the East of England. Its campuses are located in four cities - Cambridge, Chelmsford, London, and Peterborough.

Cambridge

This friendly, bustling campus is a stone’s throw away from the centre of one the best student cities in the world.

Anglia Ruskin University’s Cambridge campus has been around since 1858 when Cambridge School of Art first opened its doors.

Renowned worldwide as a centre of learning since the 13th century, Cambridge is a beautiful city with gobsmacking architecture and riverside setting, loads of history, a vibrant culture, and a buzzing social scene.

It is a compact city that is easy to explore on foot, so it will be easy for you to discover a network of medieval streets and passageways filled with world-class museums and galleries, magnificent theatres, cafés, craft markets, picturesque gardens, bridges, and historic churches.

Chelmsford

Based by the river in the city’s University and Innovation Quarter, The Chelmsford campus is a short stroll from the lively centre.

Established in 1893, the campus is made up of striking, modern buildings that house state-of-the-art facilities. It houses the university’s new School of Medicine, one of the largest business schools in the East of England, in the award-winning Lord Ashcroft Building, and an innovation centre (Arise Chelmsford) that supports start-up businesses.

London

Based in Farringdon in the heart of the capital, ARU London specialises in business, finance, and law degrees.

The London campus provides students with a glorious opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the leading international capitals of the world, famed for its diversity, vibrancy, history, and business.

The campus’s central location, convenient transport links, and professional relationships throughout the city will help you take advantage of studying in one of the world’s premier student cities.

Peterborough

The latest addition (opening in September 2022) to the ARU line-up is situated in the historic city of Peterborough.

The new £30 million campus was built for a major purpose. By providing quality higher education to Peterborough, ARU is slated to increase the city’s rate of progression to university, which is lower than the national average.

Home to the university’s health, education, and social care departments, this bijou city is a medieval marvel dominated by ancient landscapes. Often described as the ‘Gateway to the Fens,’ Peterborough has a great blend of things to do and see.

Studying at ARU

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is one of the top 40 universities in the UK and a top 350 university worldwide according to Times Higher Education 2022 rankings.

While the university has been recognised for its teaching quality, its reputation as a centre for outstanding research is arguably where it shines brightest.

High-quality research

With 12 world-leading areas of research, the university is making a positive difference by tackling global issues, including disease, climate change, and mental health.

ARU’s research excellence was recognised for its impact in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) with 12 of its 15 subject areas submitted being rated as world-leading level.

The university’s research on people living with dementia, and their families, as well as its world-leading music therapy research, was recognised with the highest national honour in UK’s higher and further education.

In 2021, ARU was awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize. The prestigious award is granted every two years by The Queen in recognition of outstanding work by UK universities and colleges that demonstrate the highest levels of quality and innovation leading to significant public benefit.

World-class facilities

ARU has ensured that its research efforts and academic framework is well supported with adequate infrastructure. The university has been praised for its ‘excellent’ supportive learning environment. It won the prestigious Datapoint Merit category award at the 2018 THELMAS (Times Higher Education Leadership and Management) for the quality and good value of its learning facilities.

The award is consequential to the university’s £122 million investment in state-of-the-art facilities on its campuses and learning spaces over five years. These outstanding facilities include medical science labs, engineering labs, paramedic skills labs, computer gaming suites, fully equipped TV studios, mock law courts, and a financial trading room.

The Cambridge School of Art’s fantastic red-brick Victorian building is chock-full of art, design, and photography.

ARU Cambridge is also home to the University Eye Clinic, where optometry students learn under the guidance of qualified professionals, and where you can drop in for a free eye test.

Among the university’s newest facilities are the Science Centre in Cambridge designed to support STEM students and researchers, and two Law Clinics that allow students to work in real-life cases with qualified solicitors.

Making an impact on entrepreneurship and innovation

Innovation is at the heart of ARU’S work-based learning programmes. It offers courses that prepare entrepreneurial students to succeed in pursuing their own businesses and has been recognised for its engagement with entrepreneurs and business owners.

MedTech campus, one of the world’s largest innovation spaces, and MedBic reflect the university’s strategic approach to entrepreneurship in the fields of health and social care. ARU has been praised for it, as well as the support provided by subsidiary Ixion Holdings to 5,000 start-up businesses.

It was crowned the Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the 2014 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

It also ranked in the top 10 percent for skills and enterprise and the in the top 20 percent for local growth and regeneration among English Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the 2021 Knowledge Excellence Framework (KEF).

Anglia Ruskin Uni student life

With a thriving Students’ Union and vibrant city life right on your doorstep, there’ll be lots of opportunities to have fun, make friends and create long lasting memories outside of the ARU classrooms.

The University and the Students’ Union host a wide range of activities throughout the academic year. Attend some of its social events, or join one of the union’s 120 societies, which range from alternative music, creative writing, and academic courses to Harry Potter and Pokemon.

The union is independent of the university and students from all campuses can automatically become a member. Make your voice heard by voting in elections and through student councils or taking part in campaigns.

Explore Cambridge

When you need to explore life outside of campus, Cambridge will have a lot in store for you.

When it comes to entertainment, the city has a loaded calendar. With over 100 pubs and several popular nightclubs, the city’s nightlife is vibrant.

History of Anglia Ruskin University

ARU’s story began in 1858 when the Cambridge School of Art was opened. The art school, which is still at the heart of the modern-day campus in Cambridge, became the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) in 1960.

In 1989, CCAT merged with the Essex Institute of Higher Education to become the Anglia Higher Education College. Two years later, the merged college became Anglia Polytechnic in 1991 before being awarded university status in 1992.

It was renamed Anglia Ruskin University in honour of art critic and philanthropist John Ruskin in 2005.
