Universities in Coventry

Coventry is home to two large universities - the University of Warwick and Coventry University. Both universities are ranked inside the top 40 in the UK in the 2022 version of the respected University league tables published by the Guardian. Warwick made the top 10 in 6th while Coventry is ranked 38th. The ranking grades student satisfaction, teaching quality and employability among other criteria.

University of Warwick

The University of Warwick was established in 1965 and today it has an enrollment of about 25,000 students. More than 10,000 of these students are from outside the UK, so you’ll be guaranteed to find a cosmopolitan atmosphere studying at the University of Warwick. No matter what country you’re from, you’ll likely find some fellow countrymen or women from the University of Warwick.

Warwick is a top university in the world, coming in 64th at the 2023 QS World University Rankings.

Coventry University

Coventry University was originally founded as the Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970. It then came to be known as the Coventry Polytechnic until it gained university status in 1992 and changed its name to the current Coventry University. The university has an excellent location, having a purpose-built campus in the city centre, right next to the Coventry Cathedral. Almost 40,000 students attend Coventry University, which offers several different degree courses in its four faculties.

The 2023 QS World University Rankings lists Coventry University as one of the best 700 universities in the world, and has also given it a 5-star rating.

Coventry is a great city for students

The city is ranked among the best in the world in the QS Best Student Cities ranking, sitting at 40th. A big part of that is thanks to Coventry’s large student population. The combined student population is around 8.1% of the total population of Coventry. International students make up a large proportion of it with around 42 percent of enrolments. This gives it the highest score in the student mix indicator, ranking first out of 140 cities.

Coventry gets a strong rating from graduate employers, thanks to the strong reputation of its universities. This is due in large part to the city’s long history of leadership in manufacturing and design.

Coventry University is one of only a few institutions to offer an automotive design course. The Warwick Manufacturing Group, the centre created at the University of Warwick that is dedicated to supporting innovative collaborations between academia and industry, runs a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Get to know Coventry

Over the years the city located in the West Midlands of England has been mocked repeatedly for lacking flair. If you’re English, it’s highly likely you’ve heard the popular idiom ‘send to Coventry.’

However, it’s ranked as the best place to live and work in the West Midlands placing eighth in the Good Growth for Cities Index according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

What Coventry might lack in glamour it makes up for in history and cultural charm. It’s a city that doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s a safe city that has a mix of modern and nostalgic architecture with its fair share of bars and restaurants.

In recent years this ex-industrial town has seen a significant urban renaissance after losing some of its identity following the devastating 1940 Blitz bombing that destroyed most of the city centre and the collapse of the motor industry in the 1980s. Thanks to this, and a vibrant cultural scene, it was named the 2021 UK City of Culture.

As an added bonus, Coventry has a great central location. If you’d like to do excursions to big cities, just hop on a train. London is just over an hour away and you can get to Birmingham in just 30 minutes.

Things to do for students in Coventry

Attractions

The Coventry Transport Museum is one of Coventry’s biggest attractions. It has a vast and impressive array of vehicles, from horseless carriages to jet-powered, land-speed-record breaking vehicles.

There's even a brushed-stainless-steel DeLorean DMC-12 (the car made famous by the film Back to the Future) with gull-wing doors on display along with an inviting 4D Thrust speed simulator and up to 300 bicycles and over 100 motorcycles.

Nightlife

When you’re feeling like letting your hair down and having a big night out, make sure to check out Kasbah. Kasbah makes Coventry come alive at night with its live music and club nights. A legendary hotspot for students, it has cemented itself as one of the best independent nightclubs in the UK.

Culture

Fargo Village is the cultural centre and creative hub of Coventry. Spread over a former car-radiator plant, the village is home to a mix of markets, shops, art and craft stores and studios, a hairdresser in a vintage Freedom Jetstream caravan, a brilliant microbrewery (Twisted Barrel), along with cafes, bakeries and street-food stalls.

Immerse yourself in Coventry’s exciting history

Due to its booming cloth and textile trade Coventry became one of the most important cities in England during the Middle Ages.

It later grew to become the centre of the British motor and bicycle industry during the 19th and 20th centuries before the Blitz bombings.

The Coventry Transport Museum, which holds the largest collection of British transport in the world, and exhibitions about the city’s involvement in WWII, is a microcosm of Coventry’s rich history.

Cathedrals

The evocative ruins of St Michael's Cathedral from the Blitz bombings stand as a memorial to Coventry's darkest hour. Visitors can climb the 180 steps of the Gothic spire for panoramic views from on top of this 700-year-old cathedral.
