Where is Singapore Polytechnic located?

Singapore Polytechnic is located on Dover Road on the site of the previous Princess Mary Barracks, which was once occupied by the British and Malayan soldiers in the 1950s, to the west of the city centre of Singapore.

Dover, a former British military and residential area, is a relatively small neighbourhood in Queenstown between the Central Area and near the industrial zone. Home to Singapore Polytechnic and many other schools, Dover is known as a zone for education institutions and facilities.

Good transport links

Dover is convenient for students in regard to transportation. Students can move around quite easily thanks to two nearby Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations.

With Dover MRT right at its doorstep, Singapore Polytechnic is the only polytechnic in the country that is located right next to a MRT station. And for even further convenience, Buona Vista MRT station, at the intersection of North Buona Vista Road and Commonwealth Avenue, is not far away either.

Studying at the Singapore Polytechnic

If you’ve chosen to study at Singapore Polytechnic, you get to choose from a wide variety of full-time courses. The institution’s 33 course offerings range from Aeronautical Engineering to Business Administration.

Singapore Polytechnic’s approach to teaching and learning is also vast. It’s committed to a research-based orientation for the design of classroom teaching and online learning. SP's approach to teaching and learning is proactive in the sense of creatively extending knowledge and producing innovative and validated practices.

The institution’s highly competent and creative teaching professionals’ efforts in guiding and nurturing its students have been recognised by the President's Award for Teachers (PAT), which rewards excellent educators for their role in moulding students. Singapore Polytechnic has the highest number of award recipients since 2017 with their lecturers being accorded the PAT award in 2017, 2018 and 2020.

Singapore Polytechnic has great facilities

Equipped with industry-relevant facilities, Singapore Poly gives students valuable hands-on experience that enhances their studies.

The first ever Perfumery and Cosmetic Science Centre in Asia, a Cyber Wargame Centre, an F1 car simulator, and the Aero Hub which houses all of SP's aeroplanes, are just some of the state-of-the-art facilities at the institution’s campus.

The institution aims to develop its students into all-rounded young adults by providing a range of services to help them develop critical life skills.

Through Career Exploration, Career Planning, and Career Readiness, students can gain in-depth knowledge about different job roles and latest industry requirements, as well as explore further educational pathways and career opportunities.

Retail and dining

When it’s time to eat, Singapore Polytechnic students have a wide array of food choices. You can choose from six food courts and various F&B (food and beverage) outlets all around campus including McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks and Subway.

Moberly Café is a great option for those who love western cuisine.

Recreational activities

The Department of Student Development stages a wide range of exciting activities through its CCA’s (Co-Curricular Activities).

One of the most popular recreational activities on campus is sports.  With a wide range of sports facilities students can invigorate their minds and bodies after a brain-sapping day of classes.

Dip into an Olympic-sized pool, check out one of the gyms for a high-energy workout, or slug it out with a friend at one of the 4 tennis courts, 3 badminton courts, or 4 squash courts.

History of the Singapore Polytechnic

The idea of a polytechnic was germinated in 1951 in a meeting at Adelphi Hotel's roof garden with local businessmen.

On October 27, 1954, the Legislative Council passed the Singapore Ordinance, which led to the establishment of Singapore’s first polytechnic. Construction of campus at Prince Edward Road began in 1957.

Singapore Polytechnic officially opened at Prince Edward Road in 1959 with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh in attendance.

The institution’s first Graduation Ceremony was held on 26 August 1961, at Victoria Theatre.

Singapore Polytechnic was restructured into the School of Industrial Technology and School of Nautical Studies in 1969. That same year the present campus site at Dover Road was chosen as the institution’s permanent home.

By the end of 1971, Princess Mary Barracks at Dover Road was converted into Princess Mary Campus forming the polytechnic’s second campus. A year later, Singapore Polytechnic had a third campus with the completion of the Ayer Rajah Road location.

After completing in 1978, the Dover Road campus was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on July 7, 1979.

In the year 2000, Singapore Maritime Academy was formed with the merger of the Polytechnic's Department of Maritime Technology & Transportation, and the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore's National Maritime Academy.

In 2002, The Polytechnic won The Public Service Award for Organisational Excellence, one of the most prestigious service awards in Singapore.

In 2009, Singapore Polytechnic and Epic Games China launched Unreal Technology Lab, the first Games Resource Centre in Southeast Asia.

The institution was also honoured for its voluntary contributions to the social service sector when it received the President’s Social Service Award in 2011.

Why should I book off-campus housing rather than live in dorms?

Booking off-campus housing has many benefits over living in university dorms. You get to choose the room type you’d like, whether you want to share with a roommate or live in a private studio apartment.

You’ll also get to choose freely in which area of Singapore you’d like to live in, whether that is in the city centre, right next to your campus or any other area you like.

What are the different room types you offer?

With Student.com you can book three different types of rooms in Singapore:

1. Shared Rooms – here you share a bedroom with a roommate. Other living areas such as bathrooms and kitchens are also shared.

2. Private Rooms – enjoy a private bedroom just for yourself. Depending on the property you choose, your bathroom may be either shared or private. Other facilities are shared with others.

3. Entire Place – here you get to enjoy a fully private studio apartment with all private living facilities. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette.

Are bills included in the rent?

This depends on the property you want to rent. Most properties we list in Singapore don’t have bills included but we also list many that do. You can use the filters to find properties with bills included and you can also see what bills are included on the property page of each property.

Are the apartments fully furnished?

Almost all the apartments we list in Singapore are fully furnished. We do also list some unfurnished properties though, so if you prefer to get your own furnishings, that is possible as well.
