The city is buzzing with activities, but with lots of outdoor spaces, serenity is just a short walk away. It boasts over 200 parks, beautiful gardens, and woodlands such as the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, and Endcliffe Park.

Studying at the University of Sheffield

One of the UK’s original redbrick universities, the University of Sheffield is a top 100 University in the world, with a global reputation for research and teaching excellence.

It continues to be recognized as a world-leading university in national and international university rankings, placing 95th in the 2022 QS World University Rankings (17th in the UK) and 121st in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Excellent teaching

The university’s teaching prowess was demonstrated in its high ranking in the 2019 Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings, where it placed 22nd out of 250 universities in Europe for teaching excellence.

Its academic departments are divided into five faculties (arts and humanities, engineering, medicine, dentistry and health, science and social sciences) with an additional International Faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Through these faculties, the university offers over 370 full-time degree courses across 75 subject areas at the undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate levels to its 30,000 students from 140 countries.

To ensure that these courses meet the demands of the field, the university collaborates closely with businesses, industries, governments, and international organizations.

Research

Sheffield is a public research university and a member of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group of research-led universities.

Its founding motto is Rerum Cognoscere Causas, which translates as ‘to discover the causes of things’. That ethos continues to hold strong to this day as 99% of the university’s research was rated as internationally recognized, excellent, or world-leading in the 2014 Research Exercise Framework (REF).

All six of the university’s Nobel Prize winners are scientists:

  • Lord Florey - 1945 Medicine/Physiology Prize
  • Sir Hans Krebs - 1953 Medicine/Physiology Prize
  • Lord Porter - 1967 Chemistry Prize
  • Sir Richard Roberts - 1993 Medicine/Physiology Prize
  • Sir Harry Kroto - 1996 Chemistry Prize
  • Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart - 2016 Chemistry Prize

World-class facilities

If you choose to go to the University of Sheffield, you’ll be studying in facilities that offer the best possible teaching and learning experience. With a large number of study areas and computer workstations, the university continues to invest in state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces.

A demonstration of that commitment is ‘The Diamond’ - an £81 million multidisciplinary teaching facility with 19 specialist laboratories for engineering students, 2,540 study spaces, nine lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a jet engine control room, a machine shop, and a virtual reality suite.

Sheffield also has excellent sports facilities including a multi-purpose sports hall, swimming pool, four squash courts, a tennis court, and cricket nets.

With all it has to offer, it’s no surprise the university ranks among the top in the UK for student experience, placing second best from the Russell Group in the 2019 National Student Survey.

Among Sheffield’s noted alumni are 2012 Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill, the first Briton in space Helen Sharman, and the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia, Amy Johnson.

Student life at Sheffield University

The university’s campus is in the heart of Sheffield and has much of what a student needs within walking distance. However, the campus provides much outside the classroom to keep students engaged.

The best Students’ Union in the UK

Sheffield’s Students’ Union, which was voted number one in the UK for four consecutive years (2017-2020) by the Whatuni Student Choice Awards, presents a wealth of opportunities for students to enjoy an enriching uni life. The union has its own bar, café, and restaurant and is a great place to hang out with friends.

At the heart of student life on campus, the Students’ Union stages a range of extra-curricular activities and events.

It also provides over 300 different clubs and societies where you can develop leadership skills by volunteering at schools and charities, or get involved in filmmaking, fashion, faith groups, dancing, sports, and entrepreneurship.

The student council will help you to get your voice heard and has a dedicated officer for international students.

Strong support for international students

There’s plenty more support for students from overseas before their arrival and throughout their studies.

The university places a strong emphasis on providing outstanding support for its over 9,000 international student body with dedicated expert advisers who can answer questions about courses, accommodation, scholarships, and living in Sheffield.

History of the University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield was born in 1897 out of a merger with the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School to form the then University College of Sheffield.

It became the University of Sheffield just eight years later in 1905 with the help of donations from Sheffield factory workers who wanted a university for their children.

The university grew incrementally until the 1950s and 1960s when it saw rapid expansion with many new buildings, including the Main Library and the Arts Tower.

The 1980s saw further development with the opening of more new infrastructure, such as the multi-purpose Octagon Centre and the Sir Henry Stephenson Building. The following decade new premises were opened for the School of the Clinical Dentistry, the Division of Education, and the Management School.

In 1995, the university formed a new School of Nursing and Midwifery after acquiring the Sheffield and North Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Three years later, Krebs Institute, a research centre for mechanistic biology, was founded.

Many more major buildings to the east and west of Upper Hanover Street, such as the Jessop Building, the Soundhouse, Jessop West, and the Information Commons, opened in the 21st century.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near Sheffield University

How can I book the best student accommodation near the University of Sheffield on Student.com?

Booking the best student accommodation near the University of Sheffield on Student.com is easy and hassle-free.

After selecting the property of your choice, go to the property page by clicking ‘View rooms’.

On the property page, simply choose your preferred room type and click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book Now’. We’ll ask you to leave your contact details so that we can then call you to walk you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have.

Why should I go for private accommodation rather than Sheffield Uni halls of residence?

Choosing private accommodation has many advantages over university halls. You’ll be living in a stylish and modern property. Many purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) also have great amenities available for their occupants. These can be things like games rooms, in-house gyms and a great calendar of social events where you can make lots of new friends.

You’ll also be able to choose which part of Sheffield you’d like to live, whether it is right next to the University of Sheffield campus, or in the city centre.

Another good thing about private accommodation is the possibility to freely choose your room type. Whether you want to share a room with someone else, or live in a studio apartment all by yourself, you can find what you’re looking for on Student.com.

What are the different room types I can choose from?

In Shared Rooms there will be two or more people sharing the same bedroom. The additional living facilities are shared with other tenants from other rooms.

In Private Rooms you’ll get your own bedroom and, in some cases, also a private bathroom. Other facilities are shared with your fellow students.

An Entire Place will give you a fully self-contained studio property just for yourself. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette, so you won’t have to share any facilities with other people.

Are bills included in the rent?

In most of the properties we list in Sheffield all bills are included. Some landlords have different policies though, so make sure to check on the property page if this is the case with the property you’re interested in.

Can I see the flat before moving in?

Our accommodation options in Sheffield have a great range of photos and videos on the property pages, so you can get a good idea of what your new home will look like through them as well.

However, if you’d prefer to see the place for yourself before making a booking and you’ll be in Sheffield before your move-in date, just give us a call and our booking consultants will be happy to set up a viewing for you.
