Get to know Auckland

Regarded as New Zealand’s gateway to the world, Auckland is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city that combines big-city attractions with a stunning natural environment that includes beautiful beaches, lush forests, islands, and volcanoes.

Auckland combines the energy of city life with spectacular natural beauty. A thriving arts and culture scene with world-class food, wine, coffee, and designer shopping is matched with beautiful harbours, islands, beaches, forests and volcanic cones offering countless adventure activities.

A global hub that is home to more than 200 ethnic groups, Auckland is rich in diverse cultures. None of those stand out more than the traditional Māori.

Discover Māoritanga (Māori culture)

The spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality and generosity) is very much alive and thriving today. Arrive in Auckland and you’ll instantly notice the city’s vibrant indigenous Māori culture.

It can be seen, heard and felt wherever you go in the city - from the schools and parks to the communities, language and way of life. So when you travel to Auckland expect the city to welcome you with open arms. You’ll discover a certain warmth and Aroha (affection) that permeates throughout the city.

Known as Tāmaki Makaurau in Māori, Auckland is a lot more than its welcoming culture though. There’s something for everyone in this unique city.

A growing economic powerhouse

As New Zealand’s largest city and the most densely populated urban area, Auckland is home to a third of the Kiwi population and is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.

The country’s largest commercial hub and economic powerhouse, Auckland provides easy access to key international markets, especially the Asia Pacific region. With numerous large-scale projects underway, the city is experiencing rapid growth across the construction and technology sectors. Innovation hubs are also expanding across the city, creating job opportunities in most industries for students and graduates.

A liveable city

Auckland’s safety record and balanced lifestyle are just two of the many reasons that draw many foreigners to the city. It consistently ranks as one of the best places to live. The 2019 Mercer Quality of Living Survey rated it the third most liveable city in the world.

Student life in Auckland

Named one of the world’s top student cities, Auckland attracts a large volume of domestic and international students every year. The city is an adventurous student’s dream with a huge range of attractions and things to do. Where else can you go sailing, horse riding, hiking or surfing, have up-close encounters with penguins and sharks, bungee jump from the tallest free-standing building in the Southern Hemisphere (Sky Tower), or explore a volcanic island, all within an hour of the city centre?

A plethora of beaches close to the city

One of the few cities in the world that sits between two harbours, Auckland is blessed with 3,700 kilometres of coastline. This means many of Auckland’s beaches, from idyllic white-sand beaches to wild black-sand surf spots, are within easy reach.

If you want to make the most of Auckland’s seaside setting without going too far, check out Mission Bay, St Heliers, Devonport, North Shore or Takapuna Beach – these beautiful beaches that are just a stone’s throw from downtown Auckland.

Kayak to a volcanic island

Volcanoes or maunga, are one of the natural attractions that make New Zealand’s landscape so unique. Students can escape from the heart of the city to one of the 48 volcanic cones dotted across Auckland. Hire a kayak and paddle out to the dormant volcano on Rangitoto Island, not far from downtown Auckland. These volcanic islands hold huge historical, spiritual and cultural significance to Auckland Māori. Just don’t forget to travel with some comfortable shoes.

Concerts and local events

If you’re more into a fun and exciting experience on the grid, Auckland is host to many large festivals, concerts, and cultural events.

From concerts by some of the world’s biggest music artists to international sporting events, and from theatre and comedy to cultural festivals, there’s something happening every night of the week in Auckland.

Some of these are amongst the many free events students can enjoy in the city right throughout the year including the Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival (a celebration of the city’s unique Māori culture), the Auckland Lantern Festival and the vibrant Pasifika Festival. At Pasifika you can explore authentic Polynesian villages representing different Pacific Island nations. Plus enjoy the food and art stalls as well as catch some live music.

Dinner at the night markets

Auckland’s lively night markets provide a great opportunity to mingle with the friendly locals. Once you’ve worked up an appetite you can join them and sample some of Auckland’s world-class food, plus shop for arts, crafts, jewellery etc. It’s a great atmosphere and with over 200 stalls you’ll be spoilt for choice.
