Get to know Munich

Situated close to the Alps in the state of Bavaria in Southern Germany, Munich, or München in German, is one of the most impressive cities in Germany. It has joined the capital city Berlin as one of the best destinations in the world for students.

The capital of Bavaria and the third-largest city in Germany, Munich has climbed up the student city rankings in recent years thanks to its high desirability, quality of life, affordability, nightlife, convenient transportation, and Bavarian friendliness.

Tracing its origins back to the 12th century, Munich is shrouded in history, and its great architecture is proof of that.

Awe-inspiring architecture

One of the most striking things about the city is its awe-inspiring architecture.

The city’s impressive medieval, Baroque and Rococo-style buildings are stunning reminders of its medieval and royal past. While the old town predominantly denotes the European style of architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries, some of the buildings from the medieval period still stand, such as the Munich cathedral (the Frauenkirche), and three of the seven town gates—Karls, Sendlinger, and Isar.

The preservation of these ancient buildings continues to keep the electrifying feeling of history alive in the city.

A city for arts, music and theatre

Munich has long been a centre for the arts, possessing some outstanding museums and art galleries.

A part of the Bavarian State Picture Galleries, the Alte Pinakothek art museum has impressive collections of Renaissance-era German and Dutch paintings, Flemish Baroque paintings, and masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Peter Paul Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck.

Another gem in the Kunstareal museum quarter is the Glyptothek. The neoclassical museum contains sculptures dating from the archaic age (c. 650 BC) to the Roman era (c. 550 AD) and many notable mosaics and reliefs.

To see Munich’s main collection of 19th and 20th-century art head to the Neue (New) Pinakothek. The Deutsches Museum is a massive museum of science, engineering, and technology on an island in the Isar River, while the Bavarian National Museum houses German and applied art since the Middle Ages.

Music has also flourished in Munich, especially opera. Munich has four principal orchestras - Munich Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Radio Orchestra, and the oldest opera company north of the Alps, the Bavarian State Opera, founded in 1653.

There are also lots of public and private theatres in Munich for drama lovers. The domicile of the Bavarian State Drama Company, The Residenztheater is one of Munich's biggest and most prestigious theatre venues. The "Home of The Bavarian Playhouse" has a vast productions program offering everything from classical pieces to contemporary plays.

The Bavarian State Theatre is the largest and one of the most important theatres in Munich.

Easy to move around

Munich is easy to move around and is well connected by rail to all the main cities of Germany and Austria. The city is a major hub for the German and European high-speed passenger rail systems, so if you want to travel during your studies, Munich is a great base with good connections to several interesting destinations around Europe.

Student life in Munich

From its awe-inspiring architecture to year-round events, Munich is a great city to study in and enjoy a memorable student life.

It’s an incredibly stimulating city for students and possesses a diverse community with over 17,000 international students, which is 25 percent of the city’s total student population.

The city’s two main universities - Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München, TUM) and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, LMU), are located in the museum district of the city centre. The cultural centre is aesthetically stunning and is packed with bars, clubs, cinemas, and restaurants.

Year-round events

There is always something going on in Munich and something different for students to experience each of the four seasons.

When autumn rolls around, the Oktoberfest, the largest beer festival in the world, is a student’s dream.

Christmas markets are a big tradition in Germany, and Munich’s ‘Christkindlmarkt’ is one of the best. Take a stroll through the medieval streets between November and December and enjoy mulled wine and culinary delicacies while viewing what’s on display.

If you’re looking to unwind during the spring and summer days, a BBQ on the banks of the beautiful Isar river that runs through the city or a picnic in one of the largest urban parks in the world (Englischer Garten) will help you to forget the stresses of uni life.

Shopping

For year-round shopping, Marienplatz, the city's most famous square has a wide pedestrianised road with a wide selection of high street shops. Olympiapark in the north and Neuperlach in the south are good shopping centre options.

Eating and drinking

It’s impossible to go hungry in Munich, as you can find many types of cuisine. No matter what kind of food you like, you’ll surely find good places to eat in Munich.

A German dish of Currywurst with a stein of the local brew in the beer gardens is fitting for the summer days, while some hearty Alpine food from a typical Bavarian tavern is ideal at wintertime.

Hans im Glück, a chain of burger restaurants with its interior decorated with trees, is a favourite among students. If you’re looking for a more rowdy experience where you can sit at a long table next to strangers drinking, chanting, and singing along with a band playing on the stage, the Hofbräuhaus is a must. Also, check out Das Labor for an unusual, science-themed cocktail and shots.
