    The Portland

    About this Property

Step out of The Portland and you’ll be right in the heart of Hull. Walk by fine Victorian buildings like City Hall on your way to Princes Quay Shopping Centre, which is built on the water. Catch a movie or grab a snack as you browse. When you’re all shopped out, make a beeline for the River Humber. Walk along the promenade, enjoying views of open water and the stunning Humber Bridge. As night falls, gather with friends and grab a table at 1884 Dock Street Kitchen, which is just one of the city’s great places to eat by the water. Move on to have a drink in bars like Bar82 by the dock in the Old Town.

Living in the city centre at The Portland means trains and buses are just minutes from your door. Buses run every 10 minutes or so to the University of Hull, and take around 15 minutes to reach the campus. Whether you’re at university or hanging out in the city, you’ll make friends fast in this friendly Yorkshire city with a strong student community.  After classes, study in the recently refurbished Brynmor Jones Library on campus, or make your way home to unwind.

Once a hotel, The Portland is now perfectly suited to student life. Back in your bedroom, you can lie back on your double bed and scan your notes, or sit at your desk to study. There’s plenty of storage with fresh white, fitted furniture like a wardrobe and cabinets accented with dark wood-effect fronts.

There won’t be any queueing for the bathroom each morning, as every room has its own ensuite. Keep drinks and snacks in your mini fridge for when you need a break. If you want to make yourself dinner, use the large communal kitchen and cook alongside housemates, keeping all you need in the storage lockers provided. Eat in the shared dining room as you chat with friends as well if you just want to pop out to use the microwave or kettle.

For a change of scene, use the Wi-Fi and study in the quiet area, or work on group projects in the larger study lounge. There are laundry facilities as well as an ATM and vending machine in the building so you don’t need to go out when you’ve got a deadline looming. You’ll have total peace of mind knowing there’s a caretaker, CCTV and secure door entry.

It's a good student accommodation at the heart in Hull . It's a safe & clean. Staff members are cooperated. However, it is far from the university. Also, kitechen need to be improved. , Overall, I've enjoyed my stay at the Portland durning my study at Hull university.

Choosing the Pros and Cons below is a short summary of points that provides a quick and easy to understand of the experience to expect at The Portland. There are a lot of positives such as the management and its staff, they do an excellent job by providing welcome and ensuring that all needs and demands are met. The room was also larger than I expected and provides a decent living space, for a better working environment there is a room dedicated to quiet study. The cooking space is large and is often populated by other residents and the locker space is enough for a plentiful amount of utensils, anything else can be stored in a personal fridge in the room. Wi-Fi is good considering there are numerous hubs and it is shared with the other residents. Another Pro that makes staying at the Portland a great choice, the interchange is only a couple minutes walk away making travelling in and out of the city smooth and not a cause for concern. Without breaking my own tradition there are a dozen takeaways within walking distance making cooking and cleaning up one less problem to consider. An elevator can be used to traverse between floors and have always been reliable and the garbage and washing services are good enough with only a couple occasions of washing machines being broken but were readily repaired. Cons have to be considered, the main one that would influence many peoples decision would be the location to campus, the exercise is a good sacrifice and setting up a bus pass is advised but the compromise to the location within the city centre makes for an obvious choice of accommodation. Other Cons that come to mind can be the other residents, triggering a fire alarm by improper smoking considering they had already been advised about the rules. This occurred once and a similar event has not happened since. Other Cons are small problems but considering the staffs quick action and readiness to engage any problem made staying here convenient and one that I recommend.

Location is great and staff are helpful. Communal areas are disgusting. In the contract it states that the communal areas are cleaned once daily by the staff but it looks like they haven't been cleaned in a while. I refuse to use the kitchen in this state. Had to clean my room late at night when I checked in due to dust and hair all over. Utterly disgusted. It would be a great accommodation if there was more cleanliness.

I expected that I would need to wipe down the room but not the kitchen! The kitchen has a funny smell, hobs are out of order and the ones available are all dirty and looked like they haven't been cleaned in a while. As for the common areas the tables and chairs are covered with dust and also look like they haven't been cleaned in a while. I can't comeplain about the price but what I can say is that we had to buy a lot of extra products just to clean the room, shower, sink and kitchen which we wouldn't have needed to buy had we found it clean. As for location it is a great and staff are very helpful. Also the window in the room does not lock and I am scared to leave my stuff alone when I leave, in fear that someone may come in and take them

The staff at The Portland are all amazing and nothing is too much for them. It is about a half hour journey on the bus to the university campus but buses come regularly from the station which is a 5 minute walk away. There have been a number of incidents where myself and other residents have not felt safe living here for a variety of reasons including a fire and intruders in people's rooms. Hardly any of the facilities in the main kitchen work or are clean. The same goes for the small kitchens on each floor, some of which don't even have a microwave. Some areas of the building are dimly lit and the electricity is faulty. Only one of the three washing machines is guaranteed to work. There have been several incidents where we have gone without water or hot water for a few days at a time. There have been leaks on several floors of the building. The lifts don't always work. The mattresses on the beds are uncomfortable and you don't get a new one despite whay you're told when you move in. I have lived here for 7 months and a problem that I've had with my shower since I moved in has only just been fixed. The price is far too much for what you actually get especially compared to other student properties in the city centre.

Staff friendly and like the location, however really disgusted and disappointed with the uncleanliness of the place. Had to spend the first night scrubbing the room, and couldn't even do a proper meal cause the kitchen is even more dirty! Really didn't expect this and entirely disappointed to be expected to clean kitchen just to heat some soup. And the smell is even worse than the sight!!! Other common areas covered in dust and the place is really not in a state to live in!

The staff here at The Portland are wonderful, they're helpful, lovely and help with any needs. The WiFi is also great. However, the cons outweigh the pros. I have never felt safe in The Portland, anyone can enter my room with the master key which I don't mind staff doing with notice but unfortunately a tenant broke into my friend's room while we were in there. This was dealt with fabulously and I'm thankful for The Portland team for helping. The windows are unsafe in some rooms because anyone can open them from the outside and come into a tenants room. The Portland should have more safety like a night guard or something, before I moved in I was told that this building was incredibly safe, but I don't think that at all. When I moved in my room wasn't ready for me and was completely filthy, it even had some of the past tenants belongings in it. We were told that we get a fresh mattress when we move in, but I never received one. The mattresses are so uncomfortable, the springs are actually popping out. There has been countless times where we have been left without water for a number of days. The communal kitchens are revolting. The microwave ovens always have old food spluttered in them, they don't have the plate in them and half of them don't even work. When the hobs are cleaned, the cleaners leave the disenfectant on them without even wiping it off. I understand it's our duty to clean up after ourselves (which a lot of us do) but the kitchens are always left in a state. The lighting on the 6th floor is also terrible, it's dark, dingy and the lights flicker constantly. It can be scary when coming in alone at night. The ceiling in my bathroom had mould on and is also flaking off because it keeps getting painted over rather than it being sorted properly. I believe that The Portland has wonderful potential, but nothing seems to be done about all its problems. This is why I will not be staying here again next year as it isn't safe or clean.
