The second-largest state capital in the United States, Austin is also the fourth-largest city in the state of Texas. It is a city bursting with sunshine, an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong sense of community, and an unwavering passion for music.

A hotbed for technology, start-ups, and innovation, Austin is blessed with a thriving economy, and a booming job market. Throw in vibrant entertainment, film, art, and food scenes, plus stunning outdoor experiences, and you get a wonderful place to study, live, and work.

So, it is no surprise the capital of the “Lone Star State” has become one of the fastest-growing and most diverse cities in America, with almost 20 percent of its residents being foreign born.

Known for its famous phrase “Keep Austin Weird,” the city is a diverse community with people from all walks of life. From world-class chefs, famous actors, singers, artists, fashion icons, and writers, to businessmen in suits, there is room for everyone in Austin.

Music, film and art

Austin has always been popular among artists, musicians, and music lovers.

With over 200 venues and daily music events, Austin lives up to its reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

There are also a variety of museums, galleries, and film theatres sprinkled across the city.

Great weather

One of the biggest draws to Austin is the city’s climate.

Thanks to the year-round sunshine, the weather in Austin is gorgeous. While other areas bake in the Texas summer heat, Austin is a little cooler, thanks to the surrounding hills in nearby Texas Hill Country.

In the wintertime, temperatures are moderate. When the sun sets on cooler evenings and the soft purple glow highlights the sky, you will see why the city is also called “The Violet Crown.”

Student living in Austin

Austin’s deep appreciation for all kinds of people, commitment to personal freedom, and an open-minded sense of community lend to fantastic student living.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Austin. At the heart of the action is its thriving downtown area. The cultural epicentre of Austin is packed with a plethora of well-known restaurants, buzz-worthy bars, and terrific nightlife.

Sixth Street, the city’s vibrant entertainment district, is distinctly Austin. Located within the city’s urban core, the historic street has a bustling array of bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Closed to through traffic on weekends (Thursdays–Saturdays), the area is packed with people in search of a good time.

With over 11,000 square feet (over 1,000 square metres) of event space, five bars, two stages, and multiple floors, Maggie Mae’s is one of Austin’s most iconic and premier destinations.

For small bites and live music, head to Firehouse Lounge & Hostel, a low-lit craft cocktail bar. Reserve your spot and enjoy a robust cocktail program at Midnight Cowboy, Austin’s premier cocktail destination.

North Austin

If you prefer to be out of all the excitement but still want to be in proximity to the downtown area, the northern end of the city is ideal for you.

You’ll still find strips of award-winning breweries, restaurants, bars, and vintage shops such as North Loop and Anderson Lane. Step into Room Service Vintage, the best vintage store in Austin, and take in the funky home décor. Relax with a good book at Cherrywood Coffeehouse, or enjoy a late-night live blues performance at the legendary Skylark lounge.

East Austin

For an eclectic mix of culture, rich history, and new, vibrant bars, eateries, and shops, head to East Austin. One of the fastest-growing areas in Austin, it has transformed into one of the trendiest, most diverse neighbourhoods in the city.

Full of flavour and possessing its own unique vibe, East Austin is where the hipsters and urban-centric can reap the benefits of the downtown vibe minus the high costs.

Go two-stepping at the hip White Horse, or sip some mezcal cocktails at Whisler’s. Check out exciting art galleries and studios, like Canopy and grayDUCK Gallery.

The perfect place to settle down, the East Side offers a lot for those who appreciate walkability, food trucks, and trendy coffee shops and bars.

South Austin

A melting pot of old and new, trendy establishments, and numerous places to explore, the southern part of Austin is the preferred choice to live for most foreigners. There’s a lot to see and do, and plenty of it is at South Congress (SoCo), a popular strip of entertainment, music, shopping, and restaurants.
