You can get started with student life at the orientation, which at the VU is called the O-fest. At the O-fest you’ll get an overview of what your courses will be like and you’ll have the chance to make lots of new friends at the many social events.

There is a separate orientation before the O-fest for international students, to make sure that students coming from abroad will have the best possible tools to get started with their studies and student life in Australia.

Clubs and students’ groups

A great way to socialise with like-minded students is to join a university club. Many of these clubs are run by students for students and are a great way to make new friends. At the VU you can join clubs like football, Australian rules football, cheerleading, music, writing and others.

History of Victoria University

Victoria University was originally established in 1916 with the name Footscray Technical School. Women first enrolled in day diploma classes in 1960. In the 1960s many European and Asian students also started attending the VU after changes to the Australian government’s immigration policy made it easier for foreign students to arrive.

The institution changed its name to Victoria University of Technology and gained full university status in 1990. The name was changed again in 2005 when Victoria University assumed its current name.

Frequently asked questions about finding student accommodation near Victoria University

How do I apply for Victoria University student housing?

Applying for student accommodation is very easy on Student.com. First, you’ll want to find your preferred property. This has been made easier by the many filters and the map feature you can find on this page. With the filters, you can find properties that offer the type of room you’re looking for and see which properties are in the right price range for you. With the map feature, you can look for properties in the particular area of Melbourne that you are interested in.

After you’ve found a property you like, click on the ‘View rooms’ button. This will take you to the property page where you’ll see the different rooms types on offer and the dates that the rooms are available for. Click ‘Enquire’ on the room type you’re interested in and fill in your details to create an account. One of our booking consultants will then contact you to give you more information, answer any questions you may have and take you through the next steps of the booking process.

Why should I choose off-campus accommodation?

There are many reasons why living in off-campus accommodation might be a better choice for you than living on-campus. Firstly, you can choose to live in any area of Melbourne you like, whether you want to live right next to the Footscray campus, another VU campus, or in the Melbourne city centre to stay close to the hustle and bustle of the city.

When living off-campus, you also get to choose your own room type. Whether you want to live with a roommate or live in a studio apartment by yourself, you’ll find lots of options on Student.com.

Many modern PBSAs (purpose-built student accommodations) also offer great amenities to their inhabitants. Many of the properties we list have things like in-house gyms, cinema rooms for awesome movie nights and games rooms to hang out in with your new friends.

What are the different housing options you offer near Victoria University?

We offer three different types of rooms in our Melbourne properties.

A Shared Room is a bedroom that you share with a roommate. Other facilities like the bathroom and kitchen are shared with occupants from other rooms.

A Private Room is a bedroom that you get all for yourself. Depending on the property, you may also get a private bathroom included. Other facilities are shared with students living in adjacent rooms.

An Entire Place is an option where you get a fully self-contained studio apartment all for yourself. No need to share anything as you’ll get your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette where you can cook your own meals.

My friend and I will both be attending Victoria University and would like to live together. Is this possible?

Sure! After submitting your application, log into our system and go to ‘manage your preferences’. There you can state that you’d like to live with your friend. Make sure your friend also does the same and states that they want to live with you.

Do you also offer accommodation for postgraduates at Student.com?

Yes, you can book any accommodation on Student.com as long as you are a full-time student.
