Get to know Belfast

Northern Ireland’s capital is a bustling, cosmopolitan city boasting a vibrant social life and rich cultural heritage. Belfast offers the buzz and vibrancy of a capital city with the warmth and friendly vibe of a much smaller community.

Though rich in history, Belfast has transformed dramatically in recent years thanks to unprecedented infrastructural investment. Today’s Belfast is a dynamic and forward-thinking European destination with plenty to offer leisure and business visitors.

You’ll still find snippets of history across the birthplace of the Titanic with several preserved breathtaking castles, monasteries and other stunning historic architecture.

Belfast’s heritage is well portrayed at its fascinating museums. You can learn about the city’s past at the Ulster Museum, City Hall, the Ulster Folk as well as the Transport Museum.

A coastal city, Belfast is also surrounded by natural beauty with many parks, gardens and a dramatic coastline with beautiful beaches to discover.

A rich heritage, buzzing cultural and social scenes, world-class visitor attractions and award-winning restaurants, all packed into an affordable city that’s easy and safe to explore makes Belfast a top option to study abroad. No wonder it was voted 'the top region to visit’ in 2018 by Lonely Planet Best in Travel.

Student life in Belfast

Belfast's students are the happiest in the UK. This is according to a recent survey carried out by Sodexo which revealed an impressive 94 percent of students that study in the city are ‘very happy’ with the standard of education, social life, affordability, and stress levels.

Belfast also has the lowest cost of living for students in the UK (Mercer) with the lowest student rent costs (2018 Natwest Student Living Index).

So with your money stretching further, you’ll have more to spend on fun activities. And you’ll have plenty of opportunities in Belfast. The Irish capital is buzzing with plenty to keep you entertained when you’re off-campus. Whether you want to get your feet moving and your heart racing at one of the city’s nightclubs or relax with friends in a pub/bar or enjoy a more traditional experience at a festival, Belfast is happy to oblige.

Festivals

From reading to cycling to dance, or whatever else you’re passionate about, chances are Belfast has a festival for it.

  • Enjoy traditional music sessions, tours and comedy performances at Feile an Earraigh
  • See music, comedy, theatre, literature, art and a whole lot more at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, while the Belfast International Arts Festival is the city’s longest-running international arts event

  • For great street food, check out the Twilight Market events held at St George’s Market
  • If you’re a proud member of the LGBTQ community, the colourful and award-winning Belfast Pride is the biggest of its kind in Northern Ireland.

Tourists from around the world flock to the cultural and religious celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day parade held on 17 March each year, while thousands of runners from around the globe travel to the city for the Belfast City Marathon.

If you love to experiment with dressing you can flaunt your fancy costumes at the infamous Halloween Monster Mash celebrations. If you’re a culture vulture Culture Night, a unique explosion of energy, arts, creativity, and fun, is the biggest evening in the city's cultural calendar.

Where to study in Belfast

The award-winning Queen's University Belfast is just a 15-minute walk from the city centre and is ranked in the Top 200 Universities in the world in the QS World Rankings (197th).

The university is highly respected across the globe as a centre of teaching excellence, innovative research, and state-of-the-art facilities. Over the last 170 years, it has developed a rich heritage and a renowned history of producing Nobel Laureates, leading global academics and national and international leaders.

Frequently asked questions about student housing in Belfast

How do I apply for student rentals in Belfast on Student.com?

After you’ve found your ideal property from our list of student rentals, go to the property page and click ‘Book Now’ or ‘Enquire’ if you want more information. Shortly after, one of our booking consultants will take you through the next steps. If you’re ready to book at this stage, this will include paying the deposit and signing the contract.

If you have further questions or are having issues making up your mind, don’t hesitate to contact us. Our booking consultants are always willing to help and give more information about the properties we list.

What are the different room types you offer?

Student.com offers three different types of rooms. Please note that not all the properties we list offer all three types though.

You’ll share your bedroom with another person as well as your bathroom and other living areas with other tenants in a Shared Room

If you want a private bedroom that’s only for you, book a Private Room. In some properties, you’ll also get a private bathroom, while in others you’ll have to share a bathroom with other students living in their own bedrooms. Any additional living space like a kitchen and communal areas are also shared.

If you desire complete privacy where you don’t have to share anything, book the Entire Place. This room type will give you a self-contained studio flat with your own bedroom, bathroom, and a kitchenette.

What bills are included in the rent?

Usually you won’t have to pay for anything else than your rent. However, check if this is the case with the property you are looking to book because different landlords may have different rules. Our booking consultants will be happy to give you more information on this.

Can you arrange a viewing for a flat I’m interested in?

Sure. We can arrange for you to see a property before you book it. Just give us a call and one of our booking consultants will arrange it for you.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

You’ll need to pay a deposit to secure a booking. In the unfortunate circumstance of you not being able to secure a student visa, many of the student accommodation providers we list will return your deposit.

Do I need a guarantor?

Many of the properties we list in Belfast require a guarantor (usually a family member) who will be responsible for paying your rent if you are unable to do so.
