York at a glance

A city of extraordinary cultural and historical wealth, nowhere in northern England screams 'medieval' quite like York.

The history buffs and ghost chasers won’t have to visit the Yorkshire Museum and examine medieval treasures on display to get a sense of York’s famous history. You’ll get a feel of nostalgia just by walking down its charming cobbled streets where you’ll see stunning architecture that dates back over 1,000 years.

Though renowned for its rich history and heritage, York is a city of contrasts. It has won praise for its artful blend of old and new, with modern digital infrastructure, gigabit broadband speeds, a young and highly-skilled workforce, first-class shopping, excellent transport links, and a thriving retail economy.

The UK’s first gigabit city, York is also a city of media arts and offers a spectacular range of cultural events, celebrating creativity in all its forms.

It doesn’t possess the skyscrapers or fancy shopping malls of some of its more celebrated neighbouring cities, but York is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the UK welcoming seven million visitors every year. That strong visitor economy plus a strong community spirit amongst happy, devoted locals have placed it as one of the perennial best places to live in Britain.

Here are just a few of the accolades York has won:

  • Britain's most desirable city to live and work in (2018) - The Sunday Times.
  • The best place to live in the North and North East (2019) - The Sunday Times.
  • The 5th most popular destination in the UK (2018) - TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice.
  • The 3rd 'must-see' region in the world (2014) - Lonely Planet Best in Travel Guide.
  • Best European travel destination (2014) - World Travel Awards.
  • Named the safest city in the world - 2015 Post Office Travel Insurance survey.
  • Global media company Conde Nast described York as its city of best architecture as well as the most friendly, community-spirited, festive, and Britain’s favourite city.

Student life in York

Despite its reputation as a quiet city, York is actually vibrant and has lots to offer with many hidden gems scattered around the city centre.

Culturally thriving, York is jam-packed with unique attractions. Some of the city’s highly-regarded museums are free to students. In addition, during the Resident’s Festival weekend in January, a student card will provide access to all the major attractions for free.

Attractions

With a York Museum Trust Card, you can examine Roman artefacts and get a general taste of the historic and cultural wealth of York at a student discounted price.

York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, is a stunning building inside and out with spectacular lights shows in November. A York Uni Student Card can get you in for free.

If art is your thing, then the York Art Gallery, which has various exhibitions showcasing all different styles of art, is the place to be.

The cute cobbled street of The Shambles located in the heart of York is a must-visit for international students, especially if you’re a hardcore ‘Potterhead.’ The infamous street said to be the inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, is home to The Shop That Must Not Be Named that has all sorts of Harry Potter paraphernalia on sale. Serving up a range of cuisines including Thai, North African, Levantine and Italian, the Shambles Market Food Court is also worth a visit.

Spark is quite different from anything else you’ll see in the city. Essentially it’s renovated shipping containers, but it is so much more. The unique community project located in the heart of York is a vibrant mix of food, drink, shops, a community theatre, a brewery, art and more. The rustic designed landmark hosts lots of independent stalls selling street food and drinks as well as various events, such as film screenings.

Art, cinema, and comedy

York recently became a UNESCO City of Media Arts and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a haven for art lovers, film buffs and theatre fanatics and there are plenty of options to soak up the rich culture in this colourful city.

  • York City Art Gallery has a great collection showcasing art from as far back as the 16th century to the current era.
  • Media arts collective Plastic Fortune runs events, exhibitions, and creative meet-ups each month in York.
  • Large theatres (York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House), two city-centre cinemas, as well as other smaller venues, cater to film-lovers and those who are into plays.
  • The annual Aesthetica Short Film Festival is a BAFTA-recognised short film festival.
  • The Barbican, the largest music and arts venue in York hosts some of the biggest touring acts in England, while The Basement hosts an eclectic mix of events including comedy, live music, poetry & drama.

Nightlife

While the long-standing urban legend that says there's a pub for every day of the year in York is not quite accurate, there’s a high density of pubs and bars in the compact city centre. You’ll be able to find your favourite among several bars that are all within walking distance of each other.

Where to study in York?

The crowning jewel of the higher education institutions in the city is the University of York. Home to 19,000 students from more than 140 countries, the university is a part of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group universities and is in the top 150 best universities in the world according to the 2021 QS Global Ranking.

Originally established in 1841 as York Diocesan College, York St John University is a public university with religious foundations located on a large, centrally-located urban campus. It attained university status in 2006.

York College is the third of the city’s further education institutions. It’s an amalgamation of York Technical College and York Sixth Form College.

Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college built in 1936. It opened its doors as the Yorkshire Agricultural Institute after World War II ended.
