Where is the University of Aberdeen located?

The University of Aberdeen has two campuses in Aberdeen. The historic Old Aberdeen campus is located about two miles north of the city centre and is home to the main university library and most arts, social sciences and physical sciences facilities.


The modern Foresterhill campus is roughly one and a half miles northwest of the city centre. Adjacent to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, it houses the university’s medical school and life sciences facilities.


The journey between the two campuses is around 30 minutes on foot. Both campuses also have good connections to the city centre, with direct bus services running regularly and taking roughly 20 minutes.

The university’s medical school is one of the most prestigious in the UK, while it’s also one of the best places in the country to study business, anthropology, sociology, languages and a host of other subjects.


Across the board, the university scores well for student satisfaction and graduate employment. It’s also got an excellent research reputation, with the majority of its output deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The University of Aberdeen has a huge study programme with a combined total of more than 600 undergraduate and graduate degrees. Courses cover a wide range of subjects, from genetics and zoology to film studies and medieval history.


The university also offers many online courses, which include fully accredited degrees designed to work flexibly around job commitments, and short courses aimed at young professionals and career changers.


Most undergraduate programmes give you the option to spend either a semester or full year abroad. Many courses also incorporate placements, internships and work shadowing opportunities to help you build valuable career skills.

Student life at the University of Aberdeen is vibrant and sociable with over 120 clubs and societies to get involved in. These range from sports teams and cultural organisations to academic societies and special interest groups.


Union Brew at the Students’ Union hosts regular events, including pub quizzes and games nights. Sports are a big deal, too, with access to Aberdeen Sports Village just outside the main campus a major perk of being a student.


Getting out and exploring Aberdeen is another key part of student life. There’s great shopping at Union Square, buzzing nightlife along Union Street and amazing outdoor spaces like Duthie Park and Aberdeen Beach. 

How much does it cost to study at the University of Aberdeen?

Tuition fees at the University of Aberdeen vary depending on your nationality. Scottish students pay around £1,800 per year of undergraduate study, UK and Irish students pay roughly £9,500, while international fees typically range from £20,000–£30,000.


The university recommends that students budget at least £1,000 per month to cover living costs. A typical UK student, then, will likely need around £21,500 for a full year of study – for international students this will be significantly more.


There’s a wide range of financial support available to help cover these costs. Most domestic students receive loans, with some also entitled to bursaries. Support for international students is less comprehensive, though there are several dedicated scholarships.

Best areas to live near the University of Aberdeen

Most students at the University of Aberdeen live in and around the city centre, with the main student hub running north along King Street towards the University of Aberdeen’s main campus in Old Aberdeen.


You’ll find lots of flat shares along roads like the Spital, Linksfield Road and Sunnybank Road. For students based at the Foresterhill campus, George Street is a top choice with a mix of traditional housing and purpose-built residences.


Closer to the city centre, Rosemount is another option with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, while Kittbrewester slightly further north is ideally placed between the university’s two campuses.
