Experience as a former MLS student: My experience at TTUHSC was negatively impacted by inconsistent leadership, unclear policies, and a subjective professional evaluative process. Administrative communication frequently relied on very short response deadlines (often under 24 hours), sometimes accompanied by warnings of dismissal, creating unnecessary pressure rather than constructive educational environment. Professional email conventions, such as standard salutations, were repeatedly ignored after this concern was raised. Professional evaluations appeared subjective and inconsistent. Behaviors that were explicitly permitted or instructed by faculty and TAs during lab and instructional sessions – such as moving around the lab to follow instructions, retrieve supplies, submit assignments before deadlines, or participate in rotations – were later penalized as professionalism issues. Expectations were not always clearly documented in written policy, leading to ambiguity and uneven enforcement. For instance, being instructed to surrender a student ID badge despite active enrollment and paid tuition, without a written policy requiring such action. The remediation process also lacked a meaningful opportunity to remediate. A mediation contract was presented under time pressure, but the structure made the outcome predetermined: even if academic lab components were passed, a failing professional evaluation alone would still result in an overall failure. This removed student agency rather than supporting improvement. Clearer written policies, consistent communication standards, and transparent, objective evaluation criteria are needed to ensure fairness accountability, and a support learning environment.
