Greenwood, Oh Greenwood You are rich in history but not in amenities. Affectionately termed a “dinosaur” by many of its long standing residents, Greenwood is a place where you might find one of the last slices of true “Old Austin,” and not the sterilized, gentrified dream of Old Austin but the somewhat dingy, charming reality of what’s left of it. As a native to the area, living in one of Austin’s first “high rises” was very cool to me. There’s a mix of owners and renters here and a lot of the owners have lived here for many years. Most people keep to themselves but I enjoyed striking up conversations with the Greenwood OGs including Brandon the security guard and some other folks I befriended that I found to be friendly and even look out for me in a neighborly fashion. The good: I lived here for two years during grad school and enjoyed it. As a student, I really enjoyed the location being away from West Campus while still being close to UT. I could walk to everything and hardly used my car. One of my main concerns when I moved in was safety as a woman living alone, but I did not have any issues. The building is very secure (so secure that it’s sometimes hard for packages to get delivered) and there is a security guard at night. They are also really good about keeping the parking garage gate in working order and I never saw or experienced any car break-ins or sketchy activity in the parking garage which I know is an issue at the neighboring apartment building. I will also say that every long-term resident I spoke to at Greenwood Towers said living there had gotten significantly better over the last several years in terms of how the building was run/not having random fire alarms in the middle of the night like older reviews state (I never experienced this). The less good: I won’t lie, I think this area has gotten slightly worse in terms of crime even just over the last two years I was here, but it’s still pretty typical for a place near UT in terms of the homeless population and crime rate and I never felt genuinely unsafe. The building is old and the AC runs on an old fashioned boiler system— this sometimes caused water and AC to have to be shut off to do repairs. However, Stacy at the front desk always let residents know well in advance and it was generally not an inconvenience and was only for a few hours at a time. The building is old and the walls are very thin to the point that I could hear my neighbors talking in their living room through the wall without straining to listen. So, admittedly, my unit didn’t feel very private. Overall, I recommend this place for students or professionals working in the area. If my rent didn’t keep increasing, my unit wasn’t straight out of 1966, and wasn’t managed by the slum lords at University Realty, I would have lived here for a few more years. If you can find a privately owned/more updated unit to rent here at a reasonable cost though, I would recommend Greenwood Towers.

Fantastic location within Austin. No more than a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk to any major attraction.
