Where is New York University located?

New York University (NYU) has two main locations in New York City – one in Manhattan, and another in Brooklyn.

Greenwich Village, Manhattan

The university’s academic, residential, and student life facilities are located on tree-lined streets centred on Washington Square Park in the heart of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.

Once a bohemian haven for artists, writers, and musicians, ‘The Village’ pulses with cultural energy. The charming and eclectic neighbourhood has always been a beacon for those seeking something a little different.

From the beatniks of the 1950s to the counterculture movements of the 1960s, this neighbourhood has been the epicentre of creativity and rebellion. While it has transformed into a bustling neighbourhood, remnants of its revolutionary past can be found in the quaint brownstones and historic landmarks that line the streets.

The Village beckons with open arms, inviting you to explore, create, and become a part of its storied tapestry. So, dive into the bohemian spirit, relish the diversity, and let the rhythm of the Village become the soundtrack to your academic adventure.

And while you are there, prepare to meet a melting pot of personalities from a diverse mix of cultures, from the free-spirited artists to the ambitious finance majors - all coexisting in perfect harmony.

Washington Square Park

Always abuzz, and surrounded by a number of the university’s buildings, the park serves as the centre of NYU’s campus. A green oasis in the midst of the chaos of the Big Apple, it is the go-to spot for sun-soaked study sessions, impromptu jam sessions, and the occasional yoga class.

Just a stone’s throw away from campus, the park is a common hangout spot for students. A hub for street performers, artists, and musicians, there is always something going on no matter the time of year.

Brooklyn, the ‘cool borough’

The New York University Tandon School of Engineering is centrally located in Brooklyn’s MetroTech Centre, one of the largest urban university-corporate parks in the United States. There are several restaurants and other retail stores that surround the area for those students living and attending classes there.

When the bustling streets of Manhattan become too much, the more chill, artsy borough across the bridge will provide more of a taste of the ‘real’ New York.

The laid-back vibe and artistic energy make it the perfect antidote to the fast-paced Manhattan grind. It’s a place where you can find inspiration in a coffee shop, stumble upon a rooftop concert, and feel like you’re part of a community that values your uniqueness.

If Greenwich Village’s past is largely bohemian, then Brooklyn’s history is like a blockbuster film with twists, turns, and a cast of characters you’d never expect. Once a Dutch settlement, Brooklyn evolved from farmlands to a metropolis in its own right.

The brownstones that line the streets tell tales of centuries gone by. But the Brooklyn Bridge stands as a symbol of human ingenuity and engineering brilliance.

A melting pot of flavours like Greenwich, Brooklyn has every cuisine imaginable, from artisanal pizza in Williamsburg to authentic pierogies in Greenpoint.

So, whether you’re into history, seeking a cultural revolution, or fuelled by culinary delights, Brooklyn will captivate you with its ‘coolness.’

History of New York University

New York University (NYU) has played a pivotal role in shaping not only the academic landscape but also the cultural and intellectual fabric of New York City.

Let’s embark on a journey through time, exploring the key milestones and transformative moments in the history of this prestigious institution.

Early foundations (1831-1890)

NYU’s history dates back to 1831 when the then head of the US Department of Treasury, Albert Gallatin, pushed forward the idea of establishing an easily accessible, innovative university in the most populous city in the country. The university was officially chartered as the University of the City of New York.

One year later, the institution opened its doors to a small group of students, adopting a novel approach to education that emphasised a broad curriculum and inclusivity. In 1896, the university officially changed its name to New York University, a name by which it had been unofficially known since its founding.

In 1894, NYU moved from its original location in Greenwich Village to a new campus called University Heights in the Bronx, marking the beginning of a physical expansion that mirrors its academic growth.

During the 1970s, the heart of NYU returned to Greenwich Village and its Washington Square campus.

In the 21st century, New York University has broadened its outlook further by setting up satellite campuses in different parts of the world. The Abu Dhabi campus was opened in 2010 and the Shanghai campus in 2011.
