Citigate Apartments

I’m very concerned about how the apartment complex handles pet ownership and accountability. After my son was bitten by a dog in a common area of the property, we contacted management trying to identify the dog and its owner. We were told they were unable to determine who the owner was. This is extremely concerning. If dogs are being walked through elevators, hallways, and other common areas, management should have a reliable way to identify registered pets and contact their owners when a serious incident occurs. Because the dog could not be located and its vaccination status could not be verified, my son had to begin the full rabies post-exposure treatment and was prescribed antibiotics as a precaution following the bite. We also had to report the incident and seek emergency medical care. This should not have been necessary simply because no one could identify a dog being walked in the complex’s common areas. A dog bite is a serious health and safety matter, and there should have been a greater sense of urgency in identifying the dog and its owner. A dog bite is not a minor inconvenience. There can be concerns about rabies vaccination status, medical treatment, reporting requirements, and the safety of other residents. When the owner cannot be located, the person who was bitten may have to undergo additional medical treatment simply because the animal’s vaccination status cannot be verified. I understand that management cannot prevent every incident, but there should be a reasonable system for pet accountability, especially after someone is injured. I hope the complex takes this incident seriously and reviews its procedures so another resident or child does not end up in the same situation.
