Living in Austin

Packing your bags and heading to Austin for your studies? With its laid-back vibe, happening social scene, and near year-round sunshine, there are few better student cities out there. The hard part, however, can be finding somewhere to live.

That’s where Student.com comes in – we have an amazing range of student housing in Austin available to rent right now. And with our filter options, it’s easy to find apartments near your chosen college or university that also fit your budget.

Whether you want to be close to campus or in the heart of the action, choosing the right area can make all the difference. Get to know Austin, from its popular student neighborhoods and transport options to the best things to see and do as a student.

Travelling in Austin

Austin has a solid public transit system with the main operator, CapMetro, running regular bus and rail services. Students at some local colleges and universities can also benefit from free or discounted travel. Buses are the backbone of the city’s public transit system with CapMetro’s high-frequency routes running every 15–30 minutes. The UT Shuttle is super convenient for UT Austin students, while there are also limited-stop MetroRapid services and Night Owl buses running until 3am.

The MetroRail Red Line connects downtown Austin to areas to the north of the city, including stops at MLK and Highland, which serves ACC’s Highland Campus. With downtown Austin being fairly compact, many students choose to cycle. If you don’t own your own bike, you can easily jump on one of CapMetro's electric bikes dotted around central Austin and dock it after completing your trip.

Things to do in Austin

Arts & culture

Austin's cultural scene blends Texas traditions with contemporary creativity. The Blanton Museum of Art, based on the UT Austin campus and  free for UT Austin students, houses one of Texas’ premier art collections and is a great place to start on your artistic wanderings through the city.

The Contemporary Austin is another highlight, showcasing modern and contemporary works at the Jones Center downtown and its beautiful sculpture park at Laguna Gloria. The Texas Music Museum, which celebrates the diverse history and traditions of Texas music, is also worth checking out.

Experiences

Austin didn’t come to be known as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ by accident. The city is home to countless iconic venues, such as Broken Spoke, Antone's, and Stubb's. The city also hosts major music festivals, with SXSW and Austin City Limits both big events on the calendar.

There’s plenty to do beyond music too. Make the most of Austin’s outdoor lifestyle with a swim at Barton Springs Pool, kayaking or paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake, or a walk through Zilker Park. For a night out, head to Sixth Street, explore the bungalow bars of Rainey Street, or check out the Red River Cultural District.

Food and drink

Synonymous with Texas barbecue, food truck culture, and Tex-Mex dishes, Austin’s culinary scene is a dream for those who like their food unpretentious and packed full of flavour. Franklin Barbecue is one of the most iconic spots for Texas barbecue, with other options worth shouting out including Micklethwait and Terry Black’s.

For something close to the UT Austin campus, Dirty Martin’s has been serving students and locals on Guadalupe Street since 1926.  Food trucks are another big part of Austin’s food scene – for plenty of choice in one place, try Thicket Food Truck Park in South Austin or The Picnic on Barton Springs Road.

 Austin Student FAQs

Have questions about student housing in Austin? Our FAQ covers everything you need to know, including rent prices, lease terms, neighborhoods, amenities, student housing and more.

West Campus is a popular choice for UT Austin students, with plenty of student housing within walking distance of campus. North Campus and Hyde Park offer a quieter, more residential feel while still being close to the university. Riverside is further from campus but has public transport links and can be a more affordable option, while Far West is another quieter residential area popular with students.
Most students in Austin choose to live off campus, which means there’s a high demand for student apartments. This is especially true in popular student areas like West Campus where pre-leasing starts early. With this in mind, it’s best to start your property search a minimum of three months before your planned move-in date.
Rental costs for student housing in Austin vary widely depending on the neighborhood and type of property, with studio apartments in popular areas like West Campus commanding a significant price. The apartments we list in Austin typically range from $1,000–$1,600 per month.
Austin is generally considered one of the safer major cities in the US. Popular student areas around UT Austin have strong safety records, with campus police providing security services and night safety escorts upon request. Still, you should exercise the usual precautions like securing your belongings and keeping an eye on your surroundings after dark.
If you want to study in Austin as a non-US citizen, you’ll need to obtain an F-1 visa from a US embassy or consulate in your home country. Read more on the requirements and your eligibility here.
