Queen Mary’s long and proud history as a teaching institution stretches back to 1785 when The London Hospital Medical College, England’s first official medical school, was founded.

In 1843 St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College was established.

Westfield College, the first residential college for women in London, was founded in 1882. Five years later, The People’s Palace Technical Schools was opened by Queen Victoria, which became East London Technical College in 1896.

In 1905 East London Technical College became East London College. It later got renamed Queen Mary College in 1934 to honour Mary of Teck, wife of King George V.

Queen Mary College merged with Westfield College to become Queen Mary and Westfield College in 1989. Three years later, another merger took place between The Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s and The London Hospital Medical College to form Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Bart’s was then joined by Queen Mary College, Westfield College and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1995. Five years later, Queen Mary and Westfield College changed its name to Queen Mary University of London.

The Centre of the Cell, the world’s first science education centre located within a working research laboratory, opened at the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science in 2009.

In 2012, QMUL became a member of the prestigious Russell Group.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near Queen Mary University of London

How do I make an accommodation application for a student room near Queen Mary University of London on Student.com?

Booking a student room on Student.com is easy.

First, find your ideal student property by using our search filters and map function. Once you’ve found a property you like, click ‘View rooms’ to go to the property page.

On the property page, you’ll need to choose your preferred room type. Then click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book Now.’ One of our booking consultants will call you thereafter to answer any questions you may have and to take you through the next steps in the booking process.

Once you’re ready to book, a contract will be prepared for you to sign.

Why should I go for private accommodation rather than a QMUL residence in university halls?

Private accommodation has many benefits. Many of the modern purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) we list have excellent facilities available to the students living there. PBSAs in London often have amenities like games rooms, in-house gyms and cinema rooms, as well as a calendar of social events where you can get to know people and make new friends.

When you opt for a private accommodation, you’ll also get to live in any area of London you like. Whether you want to live right next to your campus, in the city centre or a particular area of London you like, you’ll surely find options on Student.com.

You can also freely choose your room type in private accommodation. You can choose to share a room with a flatmate in private accommodation too, but you can also choose to live by yourself in a fully self-contained studio property, something which is not always available in university halls.

What are the different room types on offer?

There are three different types of rooms to choose from with our QMUL accommodation.

With Shared Rooms, two or more people will sleep in separate beds in the same bedroom. Additional living spaces like bathrooms and kitchens will be shared with other tenants from other rooms.

In a Private Room you’ll get a private bedroom just for yourself. Depending on the property, your bathroom may be private or shared. Other facilities are shared with other students.

With the Entire Place, you won’t have to share anything with anyone. You’ll get a fully self-contained studio property with your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette.

Are bills included in the rent?

In most of the properties we list in London, all bills are included. Different landlords can have different policies though, so check the property page to make sure if bills are included in the property you’re interested in.

Do you offer postgraduate accommodation near QMUL?

Yes, we do. You can book any type of accommodation from us as long as you are a full-time student.

Can I see the flat before moving in?

The properties we list in London have a wide range of photos, videos and even virtual tours on the property pages, so you’ll be able to get a good idea of what your accommodation will look like even if you don’t have a viewing.

However, if you’d like to see a property before booking it, and you can get to London before your move-in date, you can contact us and our booking consultants will set up a viewing for you.
