History of London Metropolitan University

With strong educational roots dating back to 1848, London Metropolitan University has a rich history. In 1848, the then Bishop of London called upon the clergy to set up evening classes to improve the wellbeing of young men in the city, leading to the birth of the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men.

In 1896, The Northern Polytechnic Institution in Holloway opened its doors with one thousand students enrolling in the first year.

In 1929, The North-Western Polytechnic was established, enrolling more than 2,000 students with a primary focus on social sciences, humanities, and arts.

The Northern and North-Western polytechnics merged to form the Polytechnic of North London in 1971.

In 1992, after the Further and Higher Education Act received Royal Assent and gave polytechnics university status and degree awarding powers, The Polytechnic of North London became the University of North London, and the City of London Polytechnic changed its name to London Guildhall University.

Ten years later, in 2002, the university as it is today was created with the merger of London Guildhall University and the University of North London to form the London Metropolitan University.

In 2006, the ‘New Science Centre’ opened containing the largest and most advanced science teaching facility in Europe. A year later, the London Metropolitan Business School, one of Europe’s largest business schools and the largest education provider of professional courses in the UK’s South East, was launched.
