History of King’s College London

King’s College London's history dates back to at least 1561 with the first known records of medical instruction at St Thomas’ Hospital that forms part of its school of medicine today.

The university itself was established in 1829 by King George IV and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington following the theological controversy surrounding the founding of London University (University College London) in 1826 when it received its first royal charter (as a university college).

However, the seeds of the idea for KCL were planted in a sermon in October 1826 by then Christian Advocate at the University of Cambridge Hugh James Rose, who later became the second Principal of KCL.

KCL thereafter became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London when it was established in 1836. While part of the university, KCL has enjoyed financial and academic autonomy since 1994 and has awarded its own degrees since 2008.

The university on its own spans over 190 years, making it one of the oldest universities in England.

It has since grown and developed through a series of mergers with several institutions in the late 20th century including Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea College of Science and Technology (in 1985), the Institute of Psychiatry (in 1997), the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery (in 1998).
