City, University of London history

City, University of London's tradition of providing high-quality education dates back 160 years.

In 1852, The Inns of Court School of Law was founded and was one of the earliest providers of legal education in London. The institution would become a part of The City Law School in 2001.

In 1877 the St Bartholomew’s College of Nursing was founded and would later be incorporated into the School of Health Sciences at City, University of London.

Seventeen years later, The Northampton Institute was founded in 1894.

The College Building was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of London in 1898.

City’s important contribution to the study of optometry began when The Technical Optics department was established within the Northampton Institute in 1903.

In the 1920s, the Department of Optometry and Visual Sciences was founded, making the Northampton Institute one of the first establishments in the world to educate optometrists. CUL remains the only institution in London to offer a BSc in Optometry.

In 1961, the Department of Social and Industrial Studies was formed, offering classes in social sciences, industrial administration, and management studies.

Five years later, in 1966, the institution gained university status by Royal Charter and was named The City University. City joined the University of London federation on September 1, 2016. To reflect the merger, the institution changed its name to the current City, University of London.
