Lancaster at a glance

The county town of Lancashire, England, Lancaster is small enough for students to feel a safe and welcoming small-town atmosphere while maintaining a lively atmosphere to keep them entertained.

Compared to some of its more popular neighbouring cities like Liverpool and Manchester, Lancaster is relatively small with just over 200,000 inhabitants. However, this doesn’t stop the cathedral city from being a popular tourist destination. There’s enough to see and do - from the ancient Lancaster Castle to the canal and the River Lune, all the way out to the seaside town of Blackpool or the beautiful Lake District National Park.

The locals are known to be friendly and approachable. So not only will you find it easy to navigate, communicating with the natives will be a breeze.

On top of that, if you choose to live and study in Lancaster you’ll do so at a lesser cost too. No wonder it’s home to almost 3,000 international students from all around the world.

Rich history

Located in the North West of England, the county town boasts an interesting history and strong heritage pronounced by its stunning and inspiring architecture. That history and those who shaped it are hidden in the walls and buildings of its fascinating castles and museums.

Perched on the top of a hill, the medieval Lancaster Castle is ordained with antique furniture, 19th-century prison cells and views of the River Lune.

The Georgian building of the Lancaster City Museum hosts displays of the city’s history and its army regiment, while the city's seafaring past can be explored at the Lancaster Maritime Museum.

Lancaster earned the unenviable title of "the Hanging Town" after the court based in the castle (the Lancaster Assizes) sentenced more people to be hanged than any other in England outside London. The castle was also the site of the Pendle witch trials in 1612.

Student life in Lancaster

Lancaster is a small town but there’s enough going on that students won’t feel trapped in the “Lancaster bubble” as it’s fondly referred to by students.

Nightlife

The town punches above its weight when it comes to nightlife. It has a wide selection of bars and night clubs where students can let their hair down on the weekends and even after classes during the week.

The holy grail of Lancaster night life is the student-managed The Sugarhouse. Each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night students can get a ‘Sugar Rush’ from different themes and a variety of tempting drinks and entry offers.

With a ‘uni card’ students will get extensive discounts on entry and drinks and even organize free buses from the club to the university on the hour.

Other notable nightclubs are: Dalton Rooms, Elements, Hustle, Toast and The Stonewell Tap.

Coffee Shops

There is a plethora of options to satisfy a caffeine lover’s craving. Outside of fully established chain coffee shops like Costa Coffee and Starbucks, there are loads of trendy local options to get a caffeine fix in a more peaceful atmosphere. The Music Room is a very popular choice amongst students.

Eating out

From Mexican, Italian, American and Asian, you’ll find every cuisine you can imagine in Lancaster.

Barbecue chicken, cheese and bacon, chips, tomato and peas are among British pub classics. One place to get good and traditional British pub food is the Crafty Scholar.

If you’re looking for a more luxurious restaurant experience, the canal has a number of them including the popular The White Cross and The Water Witch that also has live music.

If you’re vegan or just enjoy eating dishes with no meat, head to the Whale Tail, a well-known spot in Lancaster for vegetarian food.
