History of the University of Glasgow

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest English-speaking university and the second-oldest in Scotland.

At the suggestion of King James II, a charter or papal bull from Pope Nicholas V paved the way for Bishop William Turnbull to add a university to the city’s cathedral.

Teaching began in the Chapter House of Glasgow Cathedral. It subsequently moved to the “Auld Pedagogy” building near Rottenrow.

Mary, Queen of Scots, gave the university 13 acres of land on High Street in 1563.

Delphine Parrott (Gardiner Professor of Immunology) became the university’s first female professor in 1973.

In 2014, the university became the first academic institution in Europe to divest from the fossil fuel industry in an effort to reduce the impacts of climate change.
