Get to know Loughborough

Though small and often overshadowed by its nearby Midlands neighbours, Loughborough is an impressive place to visit in its own right.

So built for students is Loughborough that some view it as a university with a town supporting it instead of a town with a university in it.

However you choose to spin it, Loughborough is a vibrant town with shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs built around its huge student population.

It might be small and historic but make no mistake Loughborough has lots to offer students from cultural activities to outdoor attractions to an active nightlife. If you visit its quaint food market you’ll likely find everything you need while the Carillon Court Shopping Centre in the centre of the town also has a lot to offer.

Within walking distance surrounding the centre you’ll find cinemas, gyms, banks and several other things a student would need.

Student life in Loughborough

This little East Midlands town offers enough thrills on a night out while still maintaining its warm and quiet nature. There are several quality pubs, restaurants, as well as cocktail bars and nightclubs across the town.

Be it fast food, high-class dinners, or traditional English pub food, there are several options for students to grab a bite to eat with friends during downtime. You can head to the popular Griffin, which is perfect for a tasty lunch, high-end boozer, and televised sports or to the well-known Wetherspoons chain pubs for a cheaper yet still tasty meal. Slightly out of the city centre, The Paget Arms is a fantastic student pub where you can also enjoy great and affordable food and drinks.

If you prefer something more chill, you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee or some dessert at one of the several cafés in Loughborough.

For true chocolate lovers, Chocolate Alchemy offers a great variety of chocolate bars, slabs, tasting boxes, bake jars and much more. Fifty Three is a unique gem in the heart of Loughborough offering homemade rolls, coffees, and cakes. If you’re into Italian dessert, Dolcino offers a wide variety including crepes, waffles, shakes, smoothies and of course ice cream.

Events

The university’s student union stages several entertainment events such as Stupid Tuesdays, Hey Ewe, or FND while you’ll also find students’ nights off-campus in venues such as Echo’s or Firefly.

Also, the town hosts fairs, markets, and other annual events throughout the year.

Things to do in Loughborough

For a good day out there are some cool leisure spots, cultural sights, and museums in Loughborough.

The town’s popular climbing venue, The Climbing Station, is the perfect place for a rigorous and fun climbing workout.

Right next to the Climbing Station you can find the Great Central Railway, the UK’s only main line heritage railway.

The Alton Towers theme park, with its white-knuckle rides and daredevil rollers coasters, is also a community favourite. It’s located just east of Stoke-on-Trent, about an hour’s drive from Loughborough.

Loughborough is cheap

What makes Loughborough ideal for students is that you can experience all of this without burning all the cash from your student loan.

Living in Loughborough as a student is relatively cheap. You can get a lot for your money at pubs and restaurants with the average pint costing around 3 pounds.

Moreover, getting around is also quite cheap. Where to study in Loughborough

Loughborough University is a perennial fixture in many of the UK’s top university rankings. It was ranked 6th in the country in the Complete University Guide for 2021 and 7th in the 2021 Guardian University ranking.

More importantly, it’s ranked as one of the best universities in student satisfaction. This makes it a frequent front-runner in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, an annual survey of UK undergraduates. It was also named the 2015 Student Choice University of the Year.

University of Loughborough is the best in the world in sports-related subjects

It might be renowned for great student experience but it’s impossible to talk about Loughborough University without mentioning sports. If you’re interested in studying something sports-related, you’ll be in for a treat in Loughborough. The QS World University Rankings has ranked Loughborough University as the best university in the world for studying sports-related subjects four times in a row in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

One of the main reasons for this is its world-class facilities. The university has two high-quality gyms, rugby, football, and cricket pitches, athletics tracks, tennis courts, and a beautiful Olympic size swimming pool.

Several notable sporting personalities have passed through Loughborough such as former world record holder and current World Athletics CEO Sebastian Coe and Paula Radcliffe, world champion and three-time winner of the London Marathon.
