Get to know Orlando

A city in the state of Florida, Orlando is the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the Southern section of the United States. With a population of about 300,000, Orlando is the fourth-largest city in Florida, only behind Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa.

With the average resident around 32-33 years old, Orlando is a young city and one of the fastest growing in the U.S. It is also one of the most culturally diverse, with one out of every six residents born outside of the United States.

One of the most-visited cities in the world, Orlando is also filled with tourists from all over the world, who continue to be drawn to the central Florida location’s unique recreational attractions, leisure activities, and great climate.

The city is home to a number of world-class theme parks and is one of the busiest cities in the U.S. for conferences and conventions. Chief among its claims to fame are Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, and the Convention Center - the second-largest convention facility in America.

While the city was built on the fame of its alluring, iconic theme parks, Orlando’s appeal goes beyond the “magic.”

Beyond the theme parks

While Orlando continues to be a city that is inspired by dreams and wonder, the amount and variety of attractions have grown immensely.

With a now robust dining scene, world-renowned nightlife, bars, and clubs, high-end outlet shopping centres, and amazing concert and sports venues, “O-Town” can now rival some of the most enticing cities in the world.

If you are an art-lover, visit the Orlando Museum of Art, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the Mennello Museum of American Art, as well as a number of smaller galleries and art studios throughout the city.

Discover upcoming live entertainment such as Broadway shows and educational programs at the Dr. Phillips Center. Also, located in the heart of the city's Downtown area, the Amway Center is Orlando's main sports and entertainment venue.

Explore 12,000 years of local history at the Orange County Regional History Center, or the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany at the Morse Museum in Winter Park.

The venerable Orlando Science Center offers hands-on exhibits and planetarium shows on giant 3-D screens. Find the Orlando Fire Museum, a small gem tucked away behind the Shakespeare Theatre in Loch Haven Park, and learn about the history of the city’s bravest, along with a host of antique equipment at the restored 1926 firehouse.

There are so many more amazing things to see and do in “the world’s theme park capital.”

Orlando has a vibrant performing arts scene with several theatres and film studios in the area. The music scene is also dynamic with hip hop, rock, reggaeton, Latino and heavy metal especially popular. So, look forward to some lively weekends.

When you are feeling sporty, check out an Orlando Magic NBA basketball game at the Amway Center, visit the Exploria Stadium to see the Orlando City soccer team, or see the out-of-town Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros teams in action at baseball spring training.

With sunny weather, big open skies, lots of green trees, and local parks, there will be lots of opportunities for relaxation, exercise, and adventure in Orlando. Dubbed ‘The City Beautiful’, there is no limit to the many adventures and exciting times that await in Orlando.

While most beaches are a good one to two hours away by car, Central Florida has more than 2,000 lakes, springs, and rivers. There are also several water sports centres in Orlando if you want to try water skiing or jet skiing.

Shopping and dining

People also come to Orlando for its malls. Within a 20-minute drive from Disney World are the sprawling Florida Mall, the Orlando Premium Outlets, and the more sleek and exclusive Mall at Millenia.

Orlando’s shopping malls aren’t just for retail activity and a quick browse through. Prepare for plenty of entertainment, dining, and fun. The 1.7 million square feet (160,000 square metres) of stores, restaurants, and venues of Orlando’s largest mall are waiting to be explored at the Florida Mall.

Sneak in a little shopping during those magical Mickey moments at Disney Springs, which is loaded with shops, dining, and entertainment options from casual and trendy to upscale.

Universal CityWalk mixes theme park magic with retail therapy and family fun. Eat, shop, dance, catch a show by the Blue Man Group, or enjoy a concert at the Hard Rock Café.

Outside of its splendid malls, there are even more options when hunger calls. About 40 ethnic cuisines are represented in the city, home to 17 James Beard Award-nominated or winning chefs. You’ll find international flavours, upscale dining, and health-conscious food options in Orlando, which is ranked a top vegan- and vegetarian-friendly destination by Livability and WalletHub.
