A jewel of the UK’s industrial past, Derby is known as the innovation centre of the UK. 

Regarded as a centre for advanced transport manufacturing, the city has strong ties with many well-known companies. It is home to the world's second-largest aero-engine manufacturer - Rolls-Royce. Bombardier Transportation, for many years the UK's only train manufacturer, is also based in Derby, while Toyota Manufacturing UK's automobile headquarters is located in nearby Burnaston, just 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southwest of Derby.

Getting around

Slap-bang in the middle of England, Derby's central location lends to convenient transportation links with the rest of the country. It’s easily accessible by rail, road, and air. 

The M1 motorway is about 10 miles east of Derby and East Midlands Airport is 15 miles from the city centre. The city is about 1 hour 40 minutes from London and just about two hours from Manchester by train. The city also has good rail links to the North East and South West of England.

Where to study in Derby?

Though gaining university status in 1992, the University of Derby can trace its origins back to 1851. Formerly known as Derby College of Art and Technology, the University of Derby’s primary campus is located in the north-west of the city and is made up of three main sites: Kedleston Road, Britannia Mill, and Markeaton Street. 

It also has campuses in Buxton, Derbyshire that host courses in hospitality, events, tourism and spa management and in Chesterfield, Derbyshire which is a base for nursing and healthcare courses. 

An ambitious and modern university, Derby offers high-quality, real-world learning experiences as well as resources for its students. It offers a range of facilities including a spa, a student-operated restaurant, multiple bars and cafes, a recording studio and various sporting facilities.
