Where is Newcastle University located?

Newcastle University’s main campus is located in the Haymarket area of central Newcastle. It also has satellite campuses in London, Singapore, and Malaysia, but the hub of the institution’s teaching, research, and collaboration is the 50-acre campus in Newcastle’s city centre.

Commonly referred to as just ‘Newcastle,’ the city is located in the North East of England on the banks of the River Tyne.

One of the most iconic cities in Britain, Newcastle is famous for its industrial heritage, distinct local ‘Geordie’ dialect, and brown ale.

From the Roman period to its time as a central figure in the 19th-century industrial revolution, Newcastle has a fascinating history. Its aptitude for engineering remains, with award-winning structures such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, which was constructed in 1998.

Today Newcastle is a vibrant, diverse, and multicultural city that combines striking beauty with fascinating museums, many restaurants, bars, a passion for sports, and a buzzing nightlife.

Cost of living in Newcastle is a lot more affordable than in some other English cities. So, enjoying what Newcastle has to offer won’t wreck your budget either.

The city’s high standard of living has led to a high ranking in the QS desirability indicator placing 61st globally. A high percentage of the city’s large student population is from overseas, leading to a very high score (21st) in the Student Mix indicator of the 2021 QS Best Student Cities ranking.

Newcastle University history

Newcastle University’s history goes all the way back to 1834 with the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery.

In 1937, the school merged with Armstrong College (founded in 1871) to form King’s College. In 1960, the institution’s scientists discovered the major brain biochemical defect that causes Alzheimer’s disease. Three years later, King’s College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne when the institution became independent from the University of Durham.

In 1984 the University’s new Medical School was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

In 2007, the university spread its wings to East Asia, setting up a campus in Singapore. Four years later it expanded further to neighbouring Malaysia, opening Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia. The London location was opened in 2015 by HRH Princess Eugenie of York.

Newcastle was awarded the world’s first mitochondrial licence, a licence to offer fertility treatments to mothers suffering of mitochondrial disease, in 2017.

Many purpose-built student accommodations also offer great, modern facilities where you can live in a safe and convenient property with excellent amenities like in-house gyms, games rooms and study spaces, where you can concentrate on your studies as well as make new friends.

Shared Rooms have two people sharing a bedroom. Additional living spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms are shared with other tenants from other rooms.

In a Private Room you’ll get a private bedroom and, depending on the property, possibly a private bathroom as well. Other living spaces will be shared with fellow students.

An Entire Place will give you the luxury of not having to share living facilities with anyone. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom, and a kitchenette. This is the perfect choice if you love your privacy!
