History of the University of Greenwich

Founded by Frank Didden, the University of Greenwich dates back to 1891 when Woolwich Polytechnic opened its doors. Influenced by its close proximity to the Woolwich Dockyard and the Royal Arsenal it focused on providing higher technical education.

In 1970, Thames Polytechnic was formed from a merger between Woolwich Polytechnic and Hammersmith College of Art and Building. This was followed by a slew of incorporations in the following years - Dartford College (1976), Avery Hill College of Education (1985), Garnett College (1987) and parts of Goldsmiths College and the City of London College (1988).

In 1992, Thames Polytechnic was granted university status and in 1993 it was renamed the University of Greenwich.

In 2001, the university relocated from its old premises in Bathway Quarter, Woolwich to its current main campus in Greenwich.
