Canterbury

Earn your student stripes in this historic, beautiful garden city. Leafy campus universities surround an ancient city centre

Enjoy living in Canterbury, one of England’s smallest but most eminent cities. With a compact centre of half-timbered buildings, a cobbled high street, a castle and one of the UK’s most famous cathedrals, the city is full of spectacular landmarks to explore. Enclosed by an ancient Roman wall, Canterbury is flanked by two leafy university campuses and a School of Art.

Though nowhere is too far to cycle in the city centre, shuttle buses make it a piece of cake to get around. Within days of arriving, you’ll have mastered the layout and with its laidback city atmosphere, it’s an ideal place to both focus on your studies while making the most of the unrivalled historic attractions.

Sate your cultural appetite with a visit to Canterbury Cathedral, the seat of the Church of England, then head to see the ruins of the huge 11th-Century Norman castle and stroll along the ancient Roman city wall. Get a sense of Canterbury’s rich literary past, catching a glimpse of the same buildings that inspired Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’. Relive the medieval misadventures in the visitor centre, starting at the Tabard Inn.

Canterbury’s mix of ancient buildings and lively nightlife also makes it the perfect place to study. Venture further to the oyster beds in the north of the city, the White Cliffs of Dover in the south, or hop on a fast train and be in central London in less than an hour.
