Hang out with the wealthy as you shop or eat out in Chicago’s oldest area, or head to the water for long walks and swims
Cross the water to River North and walk up Michigan Avenue along The Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s famous shopping strip. The area’s filled with designer shops, department stores and upscale boutiques. The Mag Mile and Gold Coast areas are teeming with restaurants and hotels in stunning historic buildings dating back to the 1870’s. Watch the beautiful window displays at big stores like Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus change with the seasons.
Explore the streets of River North, a hive of creative energy, diving into converted warehouses and factories that are now galleries and design shops. Right alongside historical buildings you’ll see modern steel and glass buildings shooting up to the sky.
Stay north of the water and wander around the Near North Side. As night falls and you get hungry, pick from restaurants serving almost any cuisine you can imagine. Be drawn to the lights of Navy Pier, an entertainment hub on the shore of Lake Michigan where you can visit the IMAX theatre, go on rides or grab dinner, taking in the energy of visiting crowds. Or why not escape the tourists and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on locals night, when it’s free for you to check out the latest exhibitions and incredible permanent collection.
Take advantage of living by the water and spend Sundays walking by long, sandy beaches or picnicking at Lincoln Park. Hire kayaks to get out on Lake Michigan and see Chicago from a new perspective, or hire bikes and cycle along the shoreline.
