South Bank & Southwark
A whirlwind of world class cultural venues, glorious food markets and atmospheric riverside history
Like the Rive Gauche in Paris, London’s South Bank & Southwark has become a byword for arts and culture. Featuring some of London’s most striking buildings and river views, it’s a great place just to watch the world go by – but once you’ve stopped staring, you’ll find an incredible variety of things to see and do.
In terms of the sheer quantity of attractions, there’s no better place to live in London than Southwark and the South Bank & Southwark. You’ll find theatres and cinemas, including the massive IMAX and the Old Vic, clustered together along the riverside, with the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe virtually round the corner.
Restaurants and nightlife range from cheap and cheerful to seriously fancy, so you’ll never be short of a bite to eat or a great night out – and if you fancy cooking for yourself, the world famous Borough Market is just round the corner. Or you could explore the gentrified hipster hangouts of Bermondsey Street before dancing your heart out in the reclaimed tunnels under Waterloo Station.
With KCL based in the area and London’s other top universities minutes away, you’ll have no trouble getting around the city. Soho and the West End are a short walk, and if you head south you can explore lively Clapham and even livelier Vauxhall. Best of all, you’ve got an excellent excuse to travel by boat.
