Central and West Berkeley
Find an eclectic urban mix in central Berkeley, where international eateries and salvage stores lead to San Fran’s iconic bay
Sandwiched between the arty downtown area and the famous Californian coastline, the areas of Central and West Berkeley have a charm all of their own. They are Berkeley’s most eclectic areas, home to a mouth-watering array of international eateries centered around San Pablo Avenue. Spend an afternoon tasting homemade German food at Gaumenkitzel, or visit Casa Latina Bakery for your favourite Mexican treats. Berkeley’s oldest pub – The Albatross – is also just around the corner, where you can while away your evenings making friends over board games.
Head west to browse upscale stores and eateries on Fourth Street, before grabbing a table in Artis Coffee to watch baristas live-roast your espresso. But Berkeley is most known for its liberal outlook, which you can soak up in a range of eco stores around Central and West. Lose yourself in three acres of salvaged goods at Urban Ore Ecopark, or browse the rails at Out of the Closet Thrift Store – who knows what you’ll find?
At the weekend, a leisurely stroll to the waterfront is a must. Enjoy a picnic with friends on the grassy hills of Cesar Chavez Park and watch locals flying their kites, or bring your camera and make the most of the spectacular views across to the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Head to Berkeley Marina to pick out your favorite yacht, or sit back and enjoy the views across to San Francisco as boats sail around the bay.
