Zona 1 Centro Storico
Prepare to fall for Milan’s Centro Storico, where historic monuments meet stylish shopping arcades and authentic eateries
Live in Centro Storico and you’ll soon adjust to life in one of the world’s fashion capitals. It’s perfectly possible to live la dolce vita on a student budget, largely thanks to the incredible array of reasonably priced attractions based here.
Spend lazy days window shopping at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping mall, where you’ll find high-end boutiques including Prada and Versace – don’t forget to spin your heels on the famous bull mosaic, which is said to bring good luck. Foodies will love to browse the shelves at gastronomic emporium Peck, which stocks an incredible range of parmesan, pastries, fresh fruit and luxury pre-prepared food.
Get your culture fix at Pinacoteca di Brera, where you can admire the collection of Old Masters, including works by Rembrandt, Goya and Van Dyck. Later, take a tour of the architecturally stunning Castello Sforzesco. You’ll find lots of museums here, including Museo d'Arte Antica where you can see frescos painted by Leonardo da Vinci – free entry is available at set times during the week.
When you want to see and be seen – a popular Milanese pastime – simply slip on your most fashionable outfit and meet friends for an aperitivo at your favourite bar or café. Order a Negroni cocktail, then eat from the incredible buffet; try La Hora Feliz for the best selection in the city. If you’re in the mood for pizza, follow the line of locals to Pizzeria Spontini where you can pick up a large slice of pizza and a beer for just a few euros.
