Where are the Liverpool John Moores University campuses located?

The university’s two main campuses are the City Campus and the Mount Pleasant campus.

The City Campus is located within the heart of Liverpool, a short walk from some of the city’s most impressive attractions including the World Museum, the Walker Art Gallery, Central Library and St George’s Hall.

The Mount Pleasant Campus is framed by Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral - two of the most recognisable landmarks from the city’s imposing skyline. Also the Mount Pleasant campus is very well located, being less than 15 minutes’ walk away from the Liverpool city centre.

A storied city with a reputation of working hard and playing hard

Much of the city’s storied past begins at the sinewy inlet of the Mersey river called the ‘pool,’ once home to a huddle of fishing families. The city was home to the world’s first commercial wet dock, which secured its role as a major port city in the early 1700s.

Today Liverpool attracts students from far and wide and with more galleries and museums than any other UK city outside of London, it is easy to see why.

The Times of London described the maritime city as ‘the coolest place to live in the UK’. It was also named as one of ‘the top ten cities to visit in the world’ by respected travel guide publishers ‘Rough Guides’.

The prize focused primarily on the institution’s development of the world’s largest robotic telescopes, in particular the Liverpool Telescope, as well as its significant public outreach work with the National Schools’ Observatory and Spaceport.

LJMU history

The Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) can trace its roots back to the Industrial Revolution and the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts, which was established in 1823.

With the formation of the Liverpool Nautical College in 1892, the institution provided training, education, and research to the maritime industry.

It expanded further by merging with different colleges such as F.L.Calder School of Domestic Science, and the City of Liverpool C.F. Mott Training College, before becoming Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970.

Under the terms of the Further and Higher Education Act, Liverpool Polytechnic became John Moores University in 1992, taking the name of one of Liverpool’s great entrepreneurs and philanthropists, Sir John Moores.
