Where is the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) located?

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Its campuses encompass a variety of precincts and buildings.

The university’s main faculty and administrative infrastructure are clustered within three adjacent yet distinct locations. Haymarket, Broadway and Blackfriars campuses are located at the southern gateway to Sydney’s central business district (CBD). Its newest precincts are situated within the elite sporting zone at Moore Park and on an industrial park at Botany.

UTS’s main campus is located on Broadway on the border of Ultimo, an inner-city suburb two kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD.

Despite significant gentrification, Ultimo still maintains some of the oldest examples of Victorian architecture. The suburb is largely cosmopolitan with over 80% of its 10,000-strong population born overseas. Its proximity to the Chinese enclave in Sydney naturally leads to a large Chinese population with about 36% according to the 2016 census. Other countries with strong ancestries are Thailand (5.0%), South Korea (3.5%), Indonesia (3.1%) and India (2.4%).

UTS's central location means you don't need to travel far from campus to access Sydney's many attractions and essential services.  Furthermore, its location is also well-served by efficient public transportation. The heritage-listed Central railway station, the largest and busiest railway station in New South Wales, is at the southern border of the suburb, a short walk from UTS.

The history of the University of Technology Sydney dates back to 1833 with the establishment of the oldest continuously running Mechanics' Institute in Australia - the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts.

In 1940 the NSW Parliament passed an act to establish an Institute of Technology which led to the establishment of the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT) in 1964.

Four years later it combined with the NSW Institute of Business Studies. It then established the first law school in New South Wales outside the university sector in 1976.

In 1985 the institution officially opened its Haymarket campus, two years prior to it receiving university status. After the passing of the University of Technology, Sydney, Act in 1987, it was reconstituted as the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) on January 26, 1988.
