I never leave reviews for anything ever but I feel the need to warn people before they get literally scammed. You pay an insane amount of money to live in a poorly built complex with constant issues. There’s nonstop construction that wakes you up around 8 AM most days, we didn’t even get a rent discount even though we were placed directly in the middle of all of the construction. Not to mention there’s a guy with a leaf blower right outside your window bright and early every morning. When I moved in, my door had been unlocked by a staff member without my permission, my room had clearly been used, my bathroom was disgusting, my toilet literally had vomit in it, and my shower was clogged. There was a whole tv in there and blankets on the bed. Random strangers had been sleeping in my bed while i was paying for it. That alone told me how poorly this place is managed. No this is not solely on management, but why are the random student workers allowed to make keys that open our bedrooms??? That’s insane. I literally had to deep clean my room the day I moved in which should have been done prior considering I paid an $850 rent… To make things worse, I wasn’t told that one of my roommates had cats before I moved in, even though I’m severely allergic and have to carry an EpiPen. I specifically stated on the roommate app that i wanted a unit with no pets. Even with this I was not allowed even a unit switch without being charged $300, which I couldn’t afford. On top of that, our dryer was broken for months. We had to run our clothes through it three to five times just to get them even slightly dry. That’s 5 whole hours just to dry clothes. We called maintenance four separate times, and every single time they insisted it was fixed when it wasn’t. We asked for a new dryer, and not only did they refuse at first, but when I told them it was still broken after they “fixed it”they rolled their eyes at me and gave attitude. After about a month of asking, we finally got a new dryer. On top of this, upon move in our couch was torn to shreds and to this day this unit has still not received a new couch. I moved out in July btw. Everything is run so disorderly, and paying about $1,000+ a month to live with three other people under these conditions is honestly ridiculous. I signed thinking i’d be living in luxury apartments, but the only luxury aspect is how much you’re paying for it. I wish so so badly that I had read these reviews before signing.

Do not let the tour be your sole reference point. The tour is great! It looks & sounds fantastic. However, I would not give The Retreat a good recommendation. They repeatedly charged my credit card without providing invoices. They charged for utilities that were far beyond reason. When the young women moved in, the back door lock wouldn't work. First floor window locks didn't work. In the entire year, the HVAC never worked consistently, despite multiple instances of work being done to temporarily get it working, nor did the toilets flush consistently. I might report this company to both the State Attorney General & the BBB. If your student wants to live there, they may have a great experience, but be prepared to check every charge and stay on the Retreat about maintenance.

*Long review but worth the read.* I don’t ever post reviews but this place is so bad, I feel the need to warn anyone considering living here (don’t.) I moved in 5 days ago and upon move in, I have had so many problems. There’s mold everywhere, my toilet and dishwasher are both broken, I’ve found numerous insects in my bedroom and in the rest of the house, my room was disgusting, there is simply no way anyone cleaned it nor did anyone check the room for any problems before I moved in. Disgustingly dirty & maintenance problems upon move in: The toilet had a disgusting black ring around it, there was dust and random dirt and crap everywhere. Additionally, my toilet was broken when I got there. I submitted a maintenance request that took them around 3 days to respond to. When maintenance came, they did not inform me they were coming. They “fixed” my toilet, locked my bedroom and front door of my house and I left my keys in my bedroom to run an errand since I had just moved in and hadn’t yet attached my keys to my wallet. Due to this, I was locked out of my house and bedroom. When someone working at the Retreat came to unlock it for me, they told me it was a $50 (I think) charge… to unlock a door… are you kidding me? I never would have needed an unlock if the Retreat had done their job and fixed their problems before I moved in. Also, if I am not going to be informed on when maintenance is coming, how should I know to have my room keys on me. Absurd if you ask me. To top it all off, when I tried to use the toilet after they said they fixed it… it was still broken. It wouldn’t flush and still made a continuous running noise. I just submitted a new maintenance request so we will see if they actually do their job this time. Our dishwasher has also broken numerous times. Bug infestation: In the 5 days I have lived here, I’ve had 3 bugs in my bathroom and one huge bug crawling on my bedroom wall. When I went to get something to kill the bug, I looked down and the bug was crawling on my LEG. I can barely sleep now knowing that this place is crawling with insects. Mold problem: I’ve been sick ever since I moved in. It wasn’t long before I discovered mold on my ceilings and in the vents. I am curious to see if/how they will resolve this issue. I should have read the reviews because all of the problems I’ve had seem to be a universal experience at this place. I am extremely disappointed in the Retreat and sad because I was excited about living here. For the amount that they charge for rent, I cannot believe the problems I’ve encountered in my first week living here. You are much better off living literally anywhere else. They have no business charging their residents what they do. This place is just as bad if not worse as majority of the “cheapest” places to live here in San Marcos and I might as well have moved into any of the other ran down apartments for almost half the price.

My daughter lived at The Retreat for the past three years. She just moved out. I can honestly say we were very happy with her experience overall. There were a couple minor inconveniences over that time frame but that is to be expected; we weren’t looking for perfection. Their apartment was clean upon move-in, maintenance was always on top of things, and on the rare occasion there was an issue, they were always friendly & tried their best to make things right. One time, I was very concerned about my daughter’s wellbeing due to a terrible migraine and they went to check on her when I couldn’t reach her. (Above & beyond!) I would recommend them time & time again based on our experience.
