Chapin Commons

Overpriced, gross, and ugly. Awful location too.

We stayed in Chapin (G block) for seven years in a family apartment, and in one word, we loved it. I recommend Chapin as it is family friendly and the cheapest on campus apartment. It has a bus stop where you can catch a bus to campus, and in front, we have Stony Brook Hospital, where the Hospital Express bus and public buses are available. Many blocks are currently being renovated, but the apartment we stayed in has not yet undergone renovation, so it is very old. Rent is expensive for the one bedroom family apartment (2k), but all the furniture and utilities are included. They now charge for parking, which started in fall 2024, and I think that’s a downside since grad students don’t get a high salary. The newly renovated apartments are really nice with wooden floors and two A/C units in the bedroom and living area. The staff is friendly but you have to follow certain rules since it belongs to the campus. There is a play area for kids and my 4 year old loved it. I highly recommend this place if you’re coming to campus or the USA for the first time as it is very convenient and safe.

I wish there was a rating below one star, absolutely gross. It may be the cheapest option on campus, but you def get what you pay for. Dead bugs in the lights, gnats all over, and no AC in summer if you’re not lucky enough to get a unit with one. Maggots also came out of the walls in my friends unit. This place shouldn’t be considered livable.

The most affordable on-campus housing option for Stony Brook graduate student. Too bad the waiting list, especially for single room or the 1BR, is just too long.
