Lived here for 4 years for grad school. Many issues with the old building infrastructure, outdated system and bad management/maintenance, but the most frustrating issue was that the bathtub didn’t drain properly. The water pools on the far end and doesn’t reach the drain unless manually scooped out with a dustpan. We reported it, and maintenance admitted the issue but said it would cost them $10k to fix, so they told us to just deal with it. They said nearly half of the apartments in the complex has this issue as the buildings are 100+ years old. It’s disgusting, unsafe, and not how anyone should have to live. They said they would not increase rent for one year instead of repair. But we would much rather have a functioning tub.

Many issues with these old buildings. The heater barely works in winter, and rain water seeps into closets. Everything is outdated and semi-functional, just covered up with thick paint to hide the wear. The bathtub doesn’t drain—you literally have to scoop out dirty water by hand after every shower. Walls are paper-thin—you’ll hear your neighbors walking and talking clearly. Mailbox and trash bins are not near the building, they’re in a central area that’s inconvenient to get to—we had to drive to check the mail or throw out trash. Management is bad and greedy, they charge you for every chance they get. They restrict AC use in summer. They advertise that maintenance is included, but will charge you if they think it’s your fault. Lost keys? Parking mistake? Tiny damage? Expect hefty fees. They also publicly shame tenants by posting notices in common areas when rent is late. Most importantly: lease is a total trap. Once you sign, you’re stuck. You can’t just cancel—termination must be submitted exactly 90 days before lease ends, on the 1st of the month, via US certified mail only. Avoid if you value comfort or fairness.
